I'm headed to NC this week for some hiking. I know this is getting out of state, but is there anything to check out between Clayton and Sylva, NC? I've not been up that way in a long time. TIA!

I just spent a week in Franklin which is right on the way to Sylva. Around that whole area you can throw a rock and hit a great hiking trail. Tons of waterfalls and a couple of balds to check out. All you need to figure out is how far, how much elevation gain, and what features you want to see.

If you go more east from Clayton like towards highlands I can tell you about a bunch of waterfall hikes but I'm not much help going towards silva.

Thanks! Our destination is Kuwohi, and eating in Sylva. I plan to break up the return trip with a side hike.

Here are some great stops on your route:
    • Eastern NC:
      • Uwharrie: about 100 miles from Clayton. Great OHV trails that open up on April 1. Uwharrie National Forest
      • It's alright for an hour or so offroad drive in a Tacoma - there are a lot of side-by-siders who will ride your tail
    • Western NC:

This is very helpful. Thank you!

I'm convinced side-by-sides are the Jet skis of the forest.

You're welcome! I grew up going to a summer camp in brevard, worked there in college, and worked there as a carpenter after college for a short stint - I'm full of recommendations for that area! Sierra Nevada Brewery in Fletcher is also definitely worth a visit too! Great food, great beer, live music - it's the Disney World of beer. Enjoy your trip!

Without question - side by siders act like they own the trail! (I'd do the same if I had one lol)
