Even if you or I was in that tax bracket, pretty sure we'd be spending the money on links, cages, driveline, fuel cell, or other. I'd imagine that's why you don't see more desert trucks running them. 74Weld is definitely good kit, AWD Trophy truck technology and the best materials. But the cost relegates that same technology to race teams and (from what i've seen) "influencers" who don't see much abuse off road.

Fack. I want to get out to Ocotillo on SAT so bad. Would be cool to see all the trucks rippin'.

So I'm doing my brakes and when pushing the pistons in to make room for the new pads, one of the pistons got stuck outwards. Any tips?

Will it allow the usage of factory fuel pump & guages?

Depends on the build. For desert stuff, sure... you're probably right.

For a more well rounded vehicle, portals have huge advantages and remove a lot of the concerns that exist with gearing, bigger tires, CV axle strength, etc.

You essentially move the reduction gearing outmost of the drivetrain and can reduce a lot of the stress on the rest. Plus not having to cut out your headlights or tub to properly cycle a 37" tire...

I'm trying to do a Mojave trip next weekend in the prerunner if anyone is interested in joining.

    That’s the plan!

this is a passion project though… probably over a year before I even make it. Need to design a housing too

I replaced my OEM calipers with these remans from Powerstop. Mine also had a stuck piston, truck coasts much better now. If you don't have the coin for a BBK, these are the way to go.

This and "how low/high does it sit" and "can it mount a skid?"

    :pout:

I've been thinking of trying something myself but am not willing to sacrifice the OE functionality.

It's funny because people complain about the cost of portals and then turn around and talk about links, cages, driveline, fuel cells, etc. ;)

I think the people going for portals are the people who have $20k to spend but don't want to spin a wrench on their truck every 2 weeks. The cost of a properly done LT set-up of some of the folks in this thread and portals with some shocks really isn't as far apart as people pretend it is.

The portal cost from 74weld includes full float rear axle shafts, new brakes on all 4 wheels with discs in the rear and double shear steering too.

Not for me personally but the value prop isn't really all that bad for what you're getting.

I think my big hangup with the portals with mid-travel is that you're increasing the center of gravity by close to half a foot (between the portals and 37s) without gaining any travel (unless you also get RCLT... which puts you at something like +7, IIRC). There's also the additional maintenance (changing gear oil on all four corners every 5,000 miles), needing to degear (if you're already regeared), still having the OEM diff (albeit converted to full float axles), and spare parts availability.

This is a jeep speed (32 gal) I’m probably going to run a 22 gallon Jaz on my truck since I mess around in the rocks and desert. Will design one around the jeep speed cell for the purely dessert/go fast people.

the 22gal cell is 9.25” tall and I intend on setting the top flush with the top of the frame so it’ll hang about 5.25” below the frame.

Yes it will have a skid. 1/4” aluminum for the jeep speed and 3/16 steel for the 22gal likely. I’m only about 10% into this project haha.

Stupid question time, if I replace only one caliper, will I need to bleed both sides?

You'll need to bleed all 4 corners.
