Must be a 37 thing. I sure can’t keep them alive. But it’s on borrowed time anyways. I’m about 90% sure I bent the housing. Still have to pull to confirm. Otherwise, a pretty solid axle.

third on the bigger oem brake upgrade.
It’s not crazy, but before I couldn’t lock up the 35”s and now I can.
One place I’d never skimp is the rotors, high quality rotors with decent pads + the 4Runner/lexus calipers are a good upgrade for like $~500 or so

Soon to be mid travel rear, bulletproofed front, overland setup, etc
I was yapping in here the other day asking questions for a rear mid travel setup, now back for some leaf pack recs. Not doing full LT with cage, but there's no other good thread with as many knowledgable guys I could find than this one for this. Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm trying to decide on a leaf pack to go with. Staying with SOA for a variety of reasons, but I want to maximize my numbers in the rear for what I'm doing. I know somebody will say that with just a mid travel setup, there's no point scrutinizing over ~1-1.5" of travel that I lose or gain between leaf packs, but I do want to do it right the first time and, since I don't plan on links or a cage in the future, I don't want to feel in a little while once I've got some spending $$ again that maybe if I'd done my mid travel setup differently I could be a little better off.

That said I plan on a 14" shock and run about 450lbs in the bed unloaded (decked, rack, RTT), 550 with camping gear. Unlikely to seriously increase in the future but I don't want to ever go over 650ish once I get a bumper and a full size spare for the bed. Also I have hammer hangers if it matters, idk, I'm fairly new to this. I've been recommended the DRT pack, as well as Dobinsons, and also heard good things about Deavers. Would go with whatever stage/level fits my weight needs with those (not the heaviest rating as I know that would limit my flex/travel too, and be overkill for my bed weight most likely. Not trying to be one of those crazy maximalist overland dudes).

Any suggestions before I order? DRT claims to allow a full 14", and I've heard the same of the Deavers. Dobinsons idk. Just want to get the most out of my money and not feel like I ever should redo my rear end down the road and spend the money twice. Any input, advice, or just shit that I got wrong and could learn would be appreciated, always trying to learn more

You really need to weight the truck to be sure of your overall weights and rear weights. My truck turned out much heavier than I expected initially and has continued to gain weight.

Do you have steel sliders? Will you go swingout bumper or spare tire on the bumper? It's not just how much weight is in the rear of the truck but how far it is rear of the rear axle as well.

At that weight you're basically HD leaf pack from any of the big brands, Alcan/Archive/Atlas (DRT). HD packs won't cycle much more than 12", anyone claiming 14" has a pretty light truck and a light pack.

    Whole lotta stuff
Deavers. All of us in the LT thread are going to recommend them because that's what 95% of us use. I had the U402 Stage IIs for awhile, they were great. Also you're better off going with a 12" shock. A 14 is going to put you in the bump too quickly if you ever go with a bypass. With the weight you're planning to run, you do NOT want to live in the bump zone, and since you're staying mid-travel geometry, there's no way around that.

Check out the Mid Travel thread. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mid-travel-bs-2-0.410188/page-314#post-30300855 Lots of knowledgeable guys in that thread too and they're on setups more comparable to what you're looking for.

Deaver makes a great spring. Alcan also makes great springs. Deaver U402’s will cycle 14”, however it is not clean travel and you do risk locking out a shackle if you don’t strap.

We went with 14” shocks for our truck, but if I could go back. I would just roll with 12’s for the simple reason of keeping the lower mount higher for better clearance. And really, that’s about all we use once it’s strapped anyways.

When it comes to mid travel setups, pick a company and roll. DRT, archive etc are all going to be extremely comparable to one another. There’s only so much that can be done with a factory length spring.

it should have been stated as "The Bay Area" instead of "Nor Cal" some of the lowest income areas of Cali are in Nor Cal.

If it failed I have a set off my truck with 50K miles on them you can have, along with the rotors. I upgraded to the 4Runner front calipers and discs.

This is really useful, thanks man. Hadn't considered the ground clearance factor with the lower mount. I'll keep all this in mind! 12"s might be the move after all. Thanks again

I want a fuel cell so bad, but I am never taking the bed off my truck again. Coolant bulkheads, ATF bulkheads, AC refrigerant bulkheads, plus the shocks, bed cage, tire cage, way too much bullshit to even think about taking the bed off

I’ll be one to vote for Alcan Springs, I went from some Frankenstein Deavers that I’ve been running for about six years After multiple re-arches and adding leaves — and was blown away how much better there Alcans felt. I typically have almost nothing in my bed, besides a spare tire, The divers would constantly lose arch and bottom, also never held any weight.
The Alcans feel more plush when the bed is empty, and they also hold up a 12 foot trailer with almost no sag.
Nothing against Deaver, as I know both companies can make great leaves for any application if it’s custom.
