As a gift, I am not sure what they want. But I chose browns/whites/muted-reds instead of purple-heart. And asymmetrical instead of a predictable pattern. Still, pure-hardwood cutting board that is personalized should be accepted.

Still trying to decide what purple heart is appropriate for ...

Are you asking? Some use it as small bars in cutting boards or even large. Heres couple examples:

Pretty. Well, I have chosen for mine, so will live with my choice. Getting the names set in each end is the complication I want to conquer. Or does that sound stupid ... a 90-degree oriented section in maple to highlight lettering with their (brother, his wife) names either end? I know I sometimes think crazy just to try a new method.

Not the thickest cutting board ever (3/4 in). Not the most complicated ever. Glued up, waiting 24 hours now, bloodwood, ash, padauk, maple, cherry, figured maple. The C and S will be routed-in using a sign-letterering template squares, leveled-filled with clear epoxy. The first initials of of my brother and his wife, but subtle instead of "screaming at you".

Not bad for a first attempt at a cutting board I think, and to try the letter-routing and and epoxy pour, with cove inset for fingers (maybe) and roundover bit the top edge. Maybe will not send it, but will see how it goes.

If I get bold I may try a "wenge" or "purple heart" 1/4 in thick strip across for "engineering" and "pretty", but cannot screw up the cross slot at that stage of the build. I will consider that.

Mainly because the resin will show light scratches.

Went to HomeDepot, bought a sign that I think describes my twisted mind. Routed out the E as a test, then C and S. After testing a couple of times I took the plunge. I think my brother (C) and sister-in-law (S) might be impressed by the letters filled in with epoxy resin. I do not care how rough it looks ... I like the "less than perfect".

Question for you well-informed and experienced people ...

How do you avoid "burn marks" using a "cove bit"? The last time I had "burn marks" was trying to use a 3-point bore bit, and fixed it by using a simple spade bit to limit metal-wood contact. But even running at speed 1 on the router did not avoid them.

Pisses me off, but the burn marks are too deep to remove and attempts only round-over the sharper edge that was the point of a finger-grab cove slot. Cannot stop me from giving it I guess, but next time I want to do better.
