A nice benefit to the Molle style design. Besides being able to have more attachment points for items. Is it also works in conjunction with our smaller Molle baskets that can be added to the sides for additional storage if needed.

 

@Taco-rado as others have said, thanks for soliciting feedback. This looks highly useful, and I would strongly consider.
Since I have a tonneau cover, I'd likely mount it near the tailgate so as to access by only folding back the first third of the tonneau. I would advocate for a mounting system that allows it to easily slide fore and aft along the rails without having to get out a wrench or socket (quick releases or similar). The downside is that it's easier to steal, but I don't see a lot of folks using this for "open air" storage since it would be so visible (and uncovered) without a cap or tonneau.

Second observation: i'm impressed with 350lb capacity, but I think it's over engineered. Anything that weighs 200lbs+ I'm putting into the bed. I think you can keep it steel for price point but lighten it up for a 200lb rating OR offer in Aluminum for weight savings. I'm sure somebody will disagree (and for the record, I like stuff that's overengineered), but given the dimensions/likely usage, I feel 350 is overkill.

3rd observation: you're aiming for distinct markets (taco, tundra, jeep, etc) with known bed dimensions. Consider defining widths using alignment holes in the components that slide together. Those alignment holes could be fixed with bolts or spring pins. I realize that the unit won't expand/contract when attached to the bed rails, but I wonder about rattling of the parts that slide if they aren't fixed.

I might consider using an eye-bolt in place of a couple of the button-head bolts near the sides for tie-down points.
I might put a bottle opener on it.

I prefer the molle style I would take aluminum also since I wouldn’t be overloaded it.

 

Ohh this is pretty neat man! Really smart idea, commenting to follow! I don't run a tonneau but do have some DRT bars with an iKamper I put on the back of my truck for camping trips. This would be really nice for the odds and ends that get tossed around. And I'm glad to hear that you're thinking about a locking lid, potentially? Could I fit sheet goods between this and the wheel arches?

All very valid observations. I would add two more. First, suggest establishing 2 or 3 fixed width aluminum units with extendable horizontal legs. Less of an "erector set" look unless of course that is what's wanted. Then, to build on JuniorVarsity's statement "... I don't see a lot of folks using this for "open air" storage since it would be so visible (and uncovered) without a cap or tonneau," would you consider building a tool box same width, half the depth as your unit? I would love a gun case size tool box because I don't need the width nor depth of the drop in tool boxes being currently sold (I would want to keep the full bed length underneath it)

Well this was off just a bit. At $350 I was in. At $450/$525 it’s a bit steep. Still cool though.

Pfft. So easy to find just about anything and everything to open a bottle.

 

Luckily we decided to go with the Molle design and offer it in steel and aluminum!

 

Truth! Feel like there’s enough options and ways to open a bottle these days.
