    Yep, I'm impressed.

Keep in mind that I've got a lot of things working in my favor... 2.7L, 5MT, regular cab, manual hubs, smallish/lightish tires (245/75r16 Toyo ATIII in SL), and mostly stock.

I regularly get above 19mpg mixed driving, 24+mpg only happens on the highway.

Picked up my father’s 08 this weekend since he has a 2025 now. The shop he continues to use for automotive work installs NAPA (or worse) parts and leaves suspension bolts loose. The brake calipers were loose on both sides as well.

Going to go through it for my brother and get my old Tundra back.

That'd be fantasyland mpg for me. I think I was about 18 before adding some things. Since I'm gonna be removing things maybe I'll go back, that'd be nice. I'm just used to 15 ish. I don't check anymore.

About a 10 hour day clearing 1/3 of the folks garage out, cleaning as best I could and getting these first three assembled and in.
Gotta say at their current sale price, no regrets. Only funk is in adjusting the feet for the floor slope, but that's more about tilting while tired. Was going to do a rolling chest in between these but thinking screw it and put another cabinet, they need the storage haha.

*I really wanted to remove that grid but they said leave it for future resale. Gotta choose your battles.

Also I'm gonna get 'em Race Deck bc their floor is rough and paint is a no go.

I had to stop going to my local for misc stuff because they were bought by NAPA. They were a great indie, anything you didn't want to or couldn't do, bring the parts in and they'd do it. Always old cruisers and random funky JDM stuff around and a great group of mechanics to shoot the shit and talk to. When I got my truck it went right in and they did the full kit from AirCabinMan, saved me a bunch of time. Now it's super strict and NAPA everything.

I dont think i been to an auto shop ever unless you count a tire shop or smog shop. I grew up with my gandpa and dad always doing their own stuff that i dont even know how to tell is a shop is good or not.

That’s the same story with this place, they went the NAPA route in 2017. All the good mechanics left and the owner died. His wife took over and runs it terribly now but my father keeps going there.

I think I have my mother convinced after I kept finding more loose suspension bolts today. She has been scared to drive his truck for 2-3 years now. What's awful is my father just put $3K in NAPA parts on this Tacoma, they will all have to come off before I hand the truck over to my brother.

The first thing I'd check is if they recommend items for replacement that have not failed. Just in hopes that you have no idea what they're talking about and will agree to have it done.

Refusing Toyota parts is another instant red flag. I don't care if they refuse to accept provided parts. I get that they can't trust the customer to provide the proper parts. But not accepting to use them at all? That's a crime on European/Japanese cars imo.

Yeah I didn't grow up with it so it was always on me what I chose to tackle and what I was comfortable with, which grew over the years (and still always learning.) But it's nice to have a shop you trust to fall back on. Like when rats got in and feasted on hoses and wires I just said nope, not doing all of that.

It really sucks that it goes that way. Especially when people like your dad get comfortable knowing (or at least thinking) they have a place that they can count on. I always think about older folks in those situations that just go with it and get screwed with a smile without even knowing it. Bums me out.

My grandpa ran his own autoshop in his garage for years. He actually designed the garage when he built it to have over sized beams in the celling, then installed a track with a hoist to pull motors.

Does $800 a month seem like a good deal for a 500 sq ft one bedroom on Main st?
