I have an issue with my 2008 tacoma 2.7
My coolant temperature increases on the highways up to 230F but at normal cruising it will be normal like 194F
I have replaced the fan clutch and the thermostat but still the same .. could it be bad water pump? How i can tell if it’s bad?

The water pump either works or it doesn't, if your heater works then the water pump is working.
I have in rare instances seen the impeller separate from the shaft on a water pump but that typically results in it quickly overheating all the time.

You could possibly have a low coolant level, air trapped in the cooling system, radiator is getting restricted, thermostat not opening all the way, or a headgasket that is starting to leak combustion gases into the cooling system.

just now i went to check, the coolant is top there is no leak then I opened the cap to check if there are any air or gases i kept the car running up to 164F and kept pressing the hoses because there were no bubbles coming but after pressing the hoses very little small bubbles came (while pressing only) I noticed the thermostat hose side very hard is that normal ? Meaning the thermostat thermostat is closed?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Maybe try using a foaming cleaner on the outside of the rad then rinse from the backside bottom up. I stood there for 13 minutes watching a river of chocolate milk run down the driveway. Don’t know but good luck!

If the truck spends any amount of time in muddy conditions Id start with a rad cleaning, like mentioned above. Garden hose clean water back to front.

If your radiator cap is original you should replace that also.

Did you clean the radiator as suggested?

makes me wonder if the radiator is clogged.

I asked an AI: A car overheating at highway speeds often indicates an issue with the cooling system's ability to dissipate heat effectively, especially when the engine is working harder and generating more heat. Common causes include a radiator issue, a bad thermostat, a leaking cooling system, or a faulty water pump.

thank u for your reply, the thermostat is new recently have been replaced, about the leaking I doubt that because the water level is the same not reducing, how can I know if the issue is with the water pump?

I don't see it being the thermostat since the symptoms didn't change at all with a new thermostat. I'm thinking the radiator core is clogged, not the fins being clogged with dirt. If it had been dirt it'd likely be noticeable immediately after leaving the the place that filled the fins with enough crap to impede airflow. If it the same thing had occurred over time you'd have seen a temp problem that slowly escalated as dirt built up. Radiator probably needs replaced or boiled out.

so you don’t think it’s a water pump problem?
