Please help. Hoping someone might have an idea what is causing this noise when I shut off engine. 2019 SR 2.7 Thanks

 

Any more details then that? can u get a small video clip and upload it to you tube? Where a bouts is the noise? What side of engine?

do you have someone who can do the start up/ shut down while you pay close attention ? maybe you can pinpoint the origin of this noise.

To me it sounds like a bearing spinning. Or a heat shield rattling... But my ears are crap and my head filled with tinnitus.

 

Isn’t that just the secondary air injection pump noise on shutdown?

 

Man, it sounds like a vacuum turning on a little... weird sound for sure...

starter trying to start again? wow.. IDK man... that is weird indeed

 

I have never heard that on my truck b4... now im going to pay attention.

Is this just a 2.7 thing?

 

It’s normal for the newer 4.0 1GRFE, my 13 and gfs 24 4Runner make the same whine on start up and shutdown. Looks like the 2.7 has the same system for emissions.

Told it was probably air pump. Doesn’t sound right to me.

 

Secondary air injection pump aka smog pump shutting off. Normal.

If you ever stop hearing the pump on engine shutdown, have $1k set aside for repairs.

 

2.7L had the flaky secondary air injection system since like 2005. The 4.0L got it in 2012. Those older engines needed the system to meet emission standards of the time.

^Yes, the 2TR-FE being designed around the turn of the century, needed the secondary air injection system to meet 2019 emission requirements.
