One and the same if Elon gets his way...

 

I got my mini split for cooling only. I knew it did heat as well, but didn't really care how cold outside it was for it to work at the time of purchase. It's a 24 k btu unit.

My 900 sqft shop is heated with in floor hydronic heat during the winter. I have it set for 50*. I may jack it to 60* if I know I got a couple days of work to do. Because of this the MS does not have to work very hard when its asked to raise the temp.

I use the MS to buffer the temperatures as its recovery is faster than the boiler heating the floor. It takes 90 minutes to raise the shop air temp 12ish degrees. It takes the boiler 6 hours to do the same.

I am impressed at how low the outside temp can be and heat was still being well produced. 10* outside temps and the shop temps were still being raised. I was happy and surprised to see that.

I was so impressed with the shop MS, my wife and I decided to install a 12 K btu unit in our 400 sqft RV. I'm thinking about yanking the factory roof air. The MS blows it away in performance!


As an experiment, we left the RV minisplit running all winter long heating the RV. Even When we were seeing -14* temps, it was still producing heat. Fortunately -temps are pretty short lived. We had it set at 70*, but the inside temps were really only about 50ish. An additional space heater and the the RV temps would be just perfect. Zero complaints and it performed much better than I expected. Color me surprised.

As for your original question; I like having the whole shop cooled, but I think it slows down production.

Because so much work involves opening and closing the overhead doors to move work in and out, I spend too much time trying to think of the best way to keep the cool air in and the hot air out.

I think I'm better off using a fan while wrenching ang going to the office for a break. Who are we kidding? We gonna be getting dirty in the shop...a bunch of sweat is not going to make a bunch of difference.

As for using wood to heat vs, the MS, that's a tough question.

If you had a MS aimed at the specific area you were working, It would save the hassle and time of starting a fire and waiting for it to push out heat. My MS pushes out heat 5 minutes after i turn it on.

If you could tent off the area of a 1 car garage, I think you would be in a good place. My high ceiling bay area is not as cool as my 9' work area. The tall ceilings really pull the cool away. The opposite is for the winter. I have a ceiling fan that pushes the warm air down to help with distributing the heat.

In Short, my 24k MS does a great job of raising my shop temps from 50*to 65* in about an hour no matter how cold it is outside.

I am 100% happy with the performance. As for longevity, I got no input. They all seem to come from China.

I don't remember the name of one of my units. One is made by Revuson. The other I don't recall unless I go out and look.


Both had the exact same install manual and both have the exact same remote control.

In addition, all these MS units offer a wifi remote control. I want one, but the need is not that great were I need one.

That’s a good point, I never thought of that. Mine make heat till around -18f.

 

I did forget to mention. The frost heater on my MS does a great job, but the hill of ice it under it was noteworthy. Make sure the MS is high enough off the ground that there is a place for the ice to built up.

 

They have a mini split installed but it freezes up is all i know.its not a heat pump

The biggest thing is, I'm not wanting to cool my entire shop. Think I will focus mainly on the office area where the water lines are with the heat part. A/C isn't a big thing for me working, I do like it when sleeping though.

I'm trying to plan ahead with the office walls, this is the only piece of insulation I had, until tomorrow.

 

@RustyGreen I saw this sitting near work on the way in this morning.

 

Guy came by yesterday wanting me to make him an adapter and hands me these bolts and says “here’s some 1/2-20 bolts”.

I said those are 1/2-13, he said you sure? I said yes.

1974 Lincoln Continental

This was a heavyweight at around 5400 pounds.

The only engine available was the mighty 460, unfortunately by '74 the emissions restrictions had made it less mighty than a few years earlier. Still a smooth & quiet powerplant though.

Until 1972 the 460 was a Lincoln exclusive powerplant, the "Mark" series cars even had a metal specification plate under the hood to show just how proud they were of it.



The lesser Fords & Mercurys had to get by with the smaller 429 engine, same design series (the 385) but less displacement. By the mid 70's safety regulations like "5 mph bumpers" had increased vehicle weight while emissions regulations* had reduced performance so the larger engine became available on the Fords & Mercs.



* ...apparently in "regulator think" making an engine use 100% more fuel when reducing emissions is an improvement...

 

...of obsolete information.

 

This piece here is a chunk. I bet it weighs close to 2,000 lbs
