Picked up this JD ZT yesterday. The only data I have is the original owner claimed that power was down. They decided to tear it down and inspect. I got this info from the secons owner.

I'm the 3rd owner. Second owner claimed it was beyond his ability. Yay! Who doesn't love a mystery?!

Regardless, It's almost impossible to do a top end rebuild without pulling the engine from the chassis. I can see from the pics that they have not even tried to remove the drive (flywheel) side of the engine. There is no way to check the stator, magnets and build up on the block/head fins.

This was a city owned unit, so I expected it to be pretty well beat. Luckily, most wear parts are easy to source.

I have projects ahead of this, so don't expect a huge amount of progress right away.

Oh, in addition, if anyone has a 25 hp Kawasaki engine head laying around, let me know. This one had a dent that is too deep to mill out.

Looks like there's enough surface area around the dent to seal as long as there's enough gasket, I'd run it :anonymous:

Holy cr@p dude! That is nuts. They are lucky you and the neighbor were there to slow it down a little. But, yeah....I'm sitting here a little miffed that the fire chief idiot would even come at you like that. Should've been thanking you and telling you how they're going to stop it! And, this wouldn't be a tractor post if it weren't for you working down the side with the blade! awesome!

I agree. Bust out the old brake drum tool and pry that bent down tab up a little without snapping it off and smear some Permatex on there

Guess it can't hurt to try. That dent is furthest away from the high pressure composition chamber, after all.

Yeah both the wife and I were a little confused after the fact by his attitude. I mean, Im sure they have had idiots thinking they could put out car fires with an extinguisher before, but I wasnt even close and he could clearly see what I was doing at the time (spraying along the opposite side of the road) and I even mentioned Id keep an eye on this side till everyone got there. But its a whatever at this point. The other fire fighters who stopped to chit chat were happy to have the help.

I did forget till now he was also kind of an ass to the farmers who field it was. They (the farmer and his wife) went over to talk to the owner of the business (while things were still being worked mind you) and he came up and just heard them talking and told her (wife of the farmer) that it was going to be expensive for them and walked off.

And just a few more pictures...this was one of their main concern areas when they arrived. Tall, dry brush and it was burning quickly towards town. Wasnt really an issue but had it jumped the canal it would have been a big problem.....it is a nice bonus for us as the brush was high enough it cut down on our visibility on the curve of the highway. So now we have better visibility lol. Not that it was ever truly an issue

And then this is looking down. not much "brush" to have burned but it sure did and it didnt take much to set all those cars on fire. Like 75% of them were on fire (some like the service truck body were just a foot or two far enough away)

Well, I did a thing today. Ordered a new Kubota BX23S. Should be delivered out to the property next week.
Kept looking at where I need to work and couldn't get past the fact that I can make my Ford compact enough to get it and my backhoe in there. Still going to keep the ford for brush work that could cause damage to the tractor. I'll just keep a diaper on it instead of splitting it and replacing the rear main.

Sooooo.... Printed out some more parts for the dog crate. My buddy drew em up. They work perfect!

Then printed out a thing for my wife....

She always has those soft tape measure things wadded up in drawers. It was a popular download, so I tried it.

Worked perfect! You just put 1 end in it & twizzle it up. Yeah it's a beginner thing, but the posdibiltys are endless.

Other than that just another house & yard chores day.

I started to replace the drive belt on my new-to-me Sears GT garden tractor that I picked up cheap last fall. I took mental notes and somehow got the old one off but for the love of all that is sacred, I couldn't figure out how to get the new one back on. I came into the house and watched a bit of YouTube university and saw where I was screwing up. I will get it back together tomorrow. I also learned that there (should) be a belt diagram near the left fender, I never noticed it. I did find a broken bolt of some sort on an upper mount on the left side ( drivers side). I will replace that once I get it apart and figure out what I need. The space between the frame and the cooling fan is a bit too tight to easily squeeze the belt into that area, at least compared to the YT video that I watched.

I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

For me with a small tractor application it amounts to the same thing, understanding technically it’s not. In my case the tractor is so small and light it’ll help cut the dirt and light roots as opposed to a straight edge. After working for Cat for a good portion of my working life I can deffinately understand the difference but these should deffinately help
