cel code help

got my cel checked at autozone and this is the code: P0171. Help?

j/k System too lean is what I get. O2 sensor needs replacement?

Here is what the manual says:

*Air intake (hose loose)
• Fuel line pressure
• Injector blockage 0 0 (EG-230) (Fuel Trim)
• Heated oxygen sensor malfunction
• Mass air flow meter
• Engine coolant temp. sensor

 

okay gotcha. would i need to replace the upstream or downstream sensor?

 

I have the exact same code and i just recently replaced both o2 sensors! I got the p0121 code i think. It said to replace them both and i did. CEL went away for several months. Then i went mudding and got stuck in a water pit and the water was up to the floor.
Could it really be the sensors?? And could it be just one? I really hope i dont have to replace both.

 

Make sure there are no leaks in your vac lines. Unmetered air after the MAF will make the engine run lean/rough.

 

Cheapest starting point: Clean your MAF. Takes about 2 minutes.
Reset your CEL and see if it comes back on.

I think the upstream in bank? causes severe loss.

 

I second the MAF cleaning had the same cel code on for 2 years replaced both sensors and it came back on 20 mins later, cleaned the MAF a month ago and hasnt been on since

Running lean? So (correct me if i'm wrong) You look at either a low fuel pressure/insufficient flow or an electronic giving your computer bad info... Fuel filters are what, $20? Whens the last time yours was changed? When's the last time you checked for vacuum leaks? (re:skytower) It's cheaper than replacing the front O2 again.

Also, long shot - but after cleaning and resetting the code did you also unplug battery for 10-20minutes and 'hit the brake a few times' to reset the comp? - The old 'incorrect' a/f rate could be stuck in there and throwing code before it polls the MAF/1st O2 for an updated reading.

My old (70's) Honda parallel twins run like shit when they even think they're not sealed up right. (CV Carbs... so kinda need that Vac pressure)

<-i'm all about checking for the cheapest/easiest before shelling out more than 50$ unless it can be very well narrowed down to just that 1 expensive part.

Check for leaks/make sure you're resetting fully.
