    That's a tough one, Smiley is definitely not real name. If you can figure out which county she was born in, you could get a copy of her birth certificate, that should have her parents real name on it. Dig through wherever she kept important papers or in old photo albums and you might find a copy of it in there.

    nope. first name.

    I'm thinking its a real name. I found both parents on Find A Grave and his headstone shows Smiley there no quotes as you would expect with a nickname unless thats a more modern practice. And it also showed that he was a WW1 Army vet so I found a draft record for Smiley as well. So looking more and more like his name really was Smiley.

    My mom and I were sure it was a nickname too. Not that the internet can't be wrong but if its on a US gov't issued draft notice I would think those only come with your birth name.

    I have found several people with the first name Smiley on my searches. One Smiley Alfonso Orr was from NC but was born in 1951 according to the genealogical records. If you were to find a baptismal record they are accepted in lieu of a social security numbers in many states
