Started playing with a trial of Argus Monitor last night for fan control, as an alternative to FanControl which sketches me out. Bit of an old school program but seems pretty powerful, might dish out for a license

Mine hasn't had a case in it's entire 5 year life haha it's been faithfully running OctoPrint on my old 3d printer with just some heatsinks and a small 40mm fan holder hat out in the open. I'm about to sell (or more likely give away.. it's fairly ancient and needs constant tinkering) that printer and need to figure out what I want to repurpose this pi as, new printer doesn't need octoprint. I think it's a pi 4 w/ 2gb of ram, so not awful but not exactly modern either. Might do a retropi or something. Maybe a pi-hole, but I'd need to buy some switches to redo network locations in my house.

    4 run, 2 don't
Always wondered what I'd do if I had one. Never had a raspberry pi.

    pihole - ad blocking
    retropie - gaming emulator
    home assistant server
    media (plex, jellyfin) server
    mini-nas
    garage web browser
    weather station server

I might look at making a "home hub" or like a smart calendar kinda thing. We have a 1080p low refresh rate samsung monitor around here somewhere I could build a frame around and wall-mount the pi. Wifes calendar, my calendar, kids calendar, tie in a few of our smart switches and outlets. If I didn't already have a garage PC I'd throw it out there for looking specs up when I need to.. but my garage PC is a ryzen 3600 w/ a 3060, so that beats a 2gb pi by a bit..

Idk, someday when I have time.. probably will just finish printing the case and then set it on my computer for the next six months

Well I'm tickled. Missing the correct size heat inserts, so it's just sitting together, not screwed or glued yet (hence why its on its back..) but really pleased with how it turned out!

Has room for two 40x40x10mm fans at the front, I already have one wired into the pi's GPIO pins, so that'll be perfect. IO is at the top, power out the back, and microsd card at the bottom under a little cover. Props to Fractal for creating this and putting it out there for free, really cool. I might reprint the side panel with a mesh modifier on it to be able to see inside a bit better but also a little more ventilation. I cancelled my prime, so I'm waiting on the slow shipping, inserts should be here tuesday.

There is a guy on YouTube who made a distributed compute network off a pile of them and documented it :D

I wonder if you figured out how to make it work with like 200 2GB models how it would handle a LLM. I mean obviously not awesome but it would be fun like running doom on a fridge OS.

It uses kernel-level drivers (winring0) with known vulnerabilities and documented cases of being used as an attack vector for malware

    https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/search/re...inring0&search_type=all&isCpeNameSearch=false

It’s not a false flag as some try to suggest

    https://github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases/issues/3016

It’s also just a closed-source project with an unsigned executable that runs with admin privileges and updates itself, which feels weird to me

The winring0 thing also applies to OpenRGB, libre/openhardwaremonitor, and various other projects, btw

Well woke up to my unraid server not working. Discovered that the cache drive nvme drive had decided to die. Oddly after it had moved some stuff off it (nothing important at all). So took it out and tried it in a portable enclosure and nope its dead dead. Its a MSI 1tb drive.

Lucky for me I had a samsung 970 from my laptop that is more or less broke that I was able to replace it with. Now just working my way through reinstalling the docker containers. Thankfully I had a backup of their data folders from yesterday so wont be much lost.

Following up on a previous post. New PC is done, I slow rolled it because I was trying to find the best deals I could while building to have a little fun and kept a spreadsheet of the costs retail vs what I was able to get the parts for.

During this time I was redoing my office desk and some other accessories that I posted about on the woodworking thread if you wanted that full look: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/any-woodworkers.271012/page-724#post-30570257

I also printed a whole cable management system for the desk because I didn't want any hanging cables or mess under the desk.

I keep saying I haven't built a PC in a decade. I had to change that.
