This is really starting to look like a trend. So far all the affected Celestial owners have a truck made in the Baja plant.

Yes, it sure is. Now I’m wondering if anyone has noticed this phenomenon in any other color. I think this kind of defect is likely to show most in this color — but I’m wondering if anyone else has noticed such “striping” on their hoods.

I keep reading that a paint job from a body shop will never match the quality of factory (assuming it's done right?).

Usually true. After I retired from the USAF, I supervised a large Ford dealership body shop for five years. We had a couple really good painters and a few not so good ones. I would not be unhappy with a repaint done by one of the really good ones on any vehicle. Until I bought this Tacoma, my first Toyota, I would have always preferred factory paint by far. But I'm not impressed with Toyota's paint. It's extremely thin for one thing, chips easily and I've never seen so many complaints with paint from any company on new vehicles as I have here. And obviously no one is fixing the problem since it's ongoing. The only other company that I've seen with bad paint was GM when their paint was coming off in sheets as people drove them. But that was an adhesion problem due to the type of paint they used, not an application problem which should have been an easy fix for Toyota. So with only a hood issue, I would either live with it if it's not noticeable except looking down from a building or you find a good paint shop and painter and have Toyota pay for the shop you want to do the front 1/3 rd of your truck. If it were me and not an issue except at a certain angle, I'd just live with it. And when you're in a tall building just don't look down. Or get a nice big hood decal.

Back in the late 80's or early 90s my Dad's GMC had the paint falling off in sheets, the Dealer repainted his truck and it actually looked better than when it was brand new.

I have the same issue with my 2021 MGM, hood is blotchy and the roof is the same. Not to mention the side panels can a bit stripey as well. I had the dealer note it and I also started noticing it on many other mgm tacomas. Wonder if it's from the same plant, it came from Mexico.

    Having gone through it....
As Crappy as toyota paint is to begin with in-regards to longevity, A respray wont last as long as factory paint...
Not a solution I was ok with...
After talking "off the record" with my toyota service manager which I have a good relationship with along with 3 co-workers, managers, estimator, that worked for my dealer body shop when I worked for ford, they also confirmed buy back or leave it alone....

Leaving it alone wasnt an option for me...
Wasnt going to be ok with a respray, but it is an option if its just an isolated panel & you push for that....

I know my toyota dealer does warranty paint repairs at their owned / attached Honda bodyshop all day long.....

Toyota paint is absolute garbage compared to ford....
That being said, factory paint always over a repaint....

IMO all Toyota cares about is profit and that’s just business I understand that but in the near future I suspect sales are going to decline due to the fact Toyota doesn’t care about quality anymore.

When I picked up my '24 silver OR (Baja factory) a year ago I immediately noticed the spray inconsistencies in the dealership delivery bay. Most noticeable on the hood and driver's side doors. This has probably been a longstanding issue for any celestial silvers coming from Baja, but most either don't notice or don't want to go down the path of repainting any panels (me). It is what it is.

Brings back memories. I used to own a 1976 Trans Am 455 4 speed manual. White with a tan interior.

I just called the customer 1-800 number and the person on the phone basically said, there's nothing he can do on his end because there is currently no recall on the paint for my truck. He then said that it is up to me to take to the dealer and they would be the ones to decide if it needs to be fixed under warranty. Any advice?!

all the info is in the thread....
take it to the dealer, have them open a repair order documenting your complaint...
theyre required to take pics & send to toyota...
You must spell it out to the dealer, you need to look at all your panels in various lighting & show them every panel effected & have them document every panel.
look at it at night under parking lot lights, grocery store, etc...
then you call the corporate # cappy posted....
you tell them you would like to start the arbitration process to get your vehicle bought back, not interested in a repair......

2009 Pyrite. Noticed doors did not match in the right light. Then noticed that other pyrite trucks had the exact same issue. Then noticed this forum identifying that pyrite had this issue. Then I assessed the possibility that someone who gets paid the lowest a company is willing to pay them for their job would be picked to respray my truck if it ever got approved by warranty. Then I stopped looking at my truck in that particular light at that particular angle. Should have kept that damn truck. And the 2017.

    Also noticed this on MGM.

The takeaway? Toyota cannot spray metallic paints on Tacomas with any consistency. But that pyrite sure did look good.
