I just did battle replacing an NX cassette on an HG hub. I had to use a gear puller to get the damn thing off. I was really worried about nuking the hub but it survived.

I tried some pliers things, not sure the exact name. The cassette is still on the xd driver and the broken axel is still in the driver. Was thinking of running to the bike shop today or getting some vice grips to get the axel out. The end cap is still on too, not sure if that's keeping the axel right

Looking at the trauma of the broken axle...I'm betting there were some forces at work that have seized the thru axle inside the XD body.

Maybe get access to or purchase a set of Pedro's Cassette Vice Grips, work the cassette of and try to tap the thru axle drive side to non drive side thru the XD FH body.

Also...a soak with PB penetrating oil first??

Must have been interesting getting the wheel out of the drop outs...

I have these though I replaced them with another more configurable setup in my van. They are low profile and have a small base footprint, which has pros and cons as they usually need to be spaced up a lot so fork adjusters or calipers clear the floor. And they are designed for pretty small diameter mounting screws - combined with the small footprint that means stability seemed a bit of an issue. But a very usable clamp design and excellent quality.

    not enough.
whoa! that's fun! so you're having a tough time trying to get the cassette off? I would maybe see if you can get the driver body back onto the hub carefully. and then see if you can do your normal operating procedure to get the cassette off. if not, definitely bench vise time. after that, you should get access into the internals of the driver body and the bearings and such. try and see if the bearings are seized or something and then work from there. i bet you can then get a punch and just punch out the axle and bearings and then put new bearing kit in.

The HG Freehub gets scored easily by the cassette and can become very hard to remove.

This was the last post I made in this tread, and I STILL haven't ridden my MTB since... spring last year? So, I made the tough, but logical decision.....

Spcialized 2FO DH shoe on sale for 70% off at BC. This is the grippiest show I've ever run. Two companies I don't love, but at this price... Tons of sizes left.

I had seen that and knew it would be an option going in. I fought with a couple in the past but not like that one! Fortunately, I was pulling a steel cassette that would take some abuse. I tried a piece of wood and a hammer from the other side of the wheel first, penetrating oil, nothing. The gear puller tightened up, then everything let go in fairly dramatic fashion! I filed down the old grooves before reinstalling but, realistically, by the time the next cassette wears out, I bet the wheels themselves will be shot.
I checked this out for grins. I need a size 43, which is the only size where the price jumps to 105 vs 45. Figures!

Get them direct. Feels like these have been on sale for like a year now? I bought 4 pair already...

Fyi: They run narrow, the DH version are also stiff AF at first but it's fine once they break in, and avoid the Suede ones..

I decided to try out the bike rack mounts for my Leitner rack since i have a spare 1UP roof rack collecting dust in the garage. For those of you ruining this or a similar setup from other rack mfr's, what are your long term thoughts after using this on the regular? The side access seems easy and lifting the XC bike is fine for my more frequent rides though i think i would still use the hitch rack for the DH boat anchor. Any concerns with the handle bars protruding way out off the side?

I’d be more worried about the height. But that’s what droppers are for :).

Yep, I remember filing the old HG freehubs when I used to have them. I guess a periodical cassette removal and filing is a good idea with those.

I would snag the bars on overhead branches where I live. That's if I could even get my heavy-ass enduro bike up there with my old back.

Damn! Such a deal on such a good shoe. I'd run these over Freerider Pros any day.
First few rides on them blew me away in grip. Truly need to adjust my pins on the Deity Supervillains because it's locked in. Seem very well constructed also. I actually like still soles, my feet tend to get tired on long rides with softer soles.
I also now have two pairs, and at that price temped to get a third too, lol.

    PUUUUUUPPPPPYYYY!!!!!!!!! :jellydance::hbd::kona::wave:

Need more pics of the little fella!
