    I wouldn’t have any issue pulling the cover off. I just wouldn’t know what to look for once I had it off.

    You would see grooves worn into the orange plastic chain guides.

    As for VVT-i cam gear rattle, I'm not sure that one could visually diagnose that alone. I'm pretty sure dealerships usually identify if it's on the exhaust or intake side and then change the entire cam gear assembly on that side.

    Probably a 10mm socket down there rubbing on the timing chain. One gets lost on every job.
