I would like to replace a front wheel bearing on my 2008 base extended cab 2 WD Tacoma but I'm unable to locate one with 5 lugs. Any suggestions? Thanks.

No hub assemblies on a 5 lug, bearings are pressed into the knuckle and the hub is pressed into the bearing.

Bearing looks like this, you need special tools and a press to change them.

So, the good news is I only need to buy an inexpensive bearing but it costs $1K to install. Is this punishment for something?

It shouldn't cost that much, labor time according to Mitchell is 2.3 hrs per side excluding alignment so that times whatever the labor rate is there plus parts.
If you have the right tools they aren't too bad to change.

This is so rare that Youtube has no videos.

They aren't really rare, all 2nd gen 5 lug Tacos use a press-in bearing and many front wheel drive cars also use a press-in bearing. Just did one on a Honda CRV yesterday.

Take the retaining nut off, slide hammer the hub out (or use the special tool if you have it), remove the knuckle, remove the retaining ring, press the old bearing out, cut the race off the hub, press the new bearing into the knuckle, install the retaining ring, press the hub into the bearing, install and torque the retaining nut, and re-install the knuckle.

I'm sure you're right about this style of wheel bearing being common among cars/trucks in general. However, IMHO anything that doesn't get some YouTube videos is rare, and I've done multiple searches. I'm also sure it isn't much of a job if you have a lift and all the required tools & materials at your fingertips. But I have none of those things plus I'm 79 years old. When I was younger I would have done this job without a second thought but it's different now. BTW, thanks for taking the time to provide a "blow by blow".

Apologies if I came off as rude, I work in a shop and fix stuff like this pretty regularly although we don't get many Tacos in.
I can understand that for a DIYer it's not a simple task.

You may check with Doorman products, they had stated making complete knuckle assemblies for certain vehicles but I don't know if they make one for a Tacoma. They aren't cheap though and I don't know what kind of quality they are.

No apology required. It takes more than you said to offend me. I think that R&R on the knuckle is the hardest part of this job so I doubt I would buy a knuckle assembly even if I found one. Thanks again.
