    Not buying it.

It would mean that of Max turned in on turn 2, taken both cars out, he would have been fine, but despite having the lead into turn 2 and Oscar not giving him any space he gets penalized. Oscar ran him off before they reached the apex.

Oscar needs to give Max space to make the corner just as Max gave Oscar space to make turn 1. If Max still runs wide because he didn't brake and gains an advantage the I'd be fine with the ruling.

You either have rules that force drivers to give space or you don't and allow them to go at each other. As it is now the rule is simple to apply for turn 1, but at tracks like Saudi where the second corner is part of a chicane it all falls apart unless you say there needs to be two wide racing through the chicane

Max will get space when he gives space, but that’ll never happen

Someone mentioned that if the runoff in T1 had instead been a wall, Max would have had to brake way earlier and would have lost the corner. Reviewing his on-board camera it also shows he barely put any steering lock on when entering. He could have been planning all along to go through the runoff to slot into 1st, with the intention of doing his usual "they didn't leave me room" nonsense (I believe someone called it his "script").

All of that is to say, it was Oscar's corner.

It was a slam dunk. Oscar beat him into the corner on the inside and Max knew it. Just as it was mentioned earlier Martin called it, Max should've just given back the position. The fact that Oscar could keep up with him even in the dirty air shows he was clearly faster. It all worked out in the end. Brilliant drive by Oscar and Lando for that matter given his crash in Q3. Next.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t max get the 5 second penalty under the safety car? Didn’t really have time to give the spot back if he wanted to but we all know he didn’t want to.

It’s all strategy. Even if you know you were wrong and should give the place back you can gamble on it being a 5-10 second penalty. With a good driver and a decent car you have the ability to bury that time difference and still place on the podium.

Basically yes, the penalty was announced as they crossed the finish line after the safety car ended.

But yes Max didn't have a chance to give it back due being under yellow flag conditions during the investigation.

IIRC the yellow was shown on lap ten. Nine laps is more than enough time for a team to decide. Teams decide inside of a single lap and more often than not almost immediately. Red Bull gambled that Fishlips could gain a five or ten second advantage running in clear air before any yellow flag and lost the bet.

Yellow flag was shown on the first lap, turn 5 or there abouts…

Piastri had the corner without a doubt, the only reason it looked close was because Max had already decided he wasn't going to brake and instead cut it. He made a decision to whine about not having space when he created the condition of no space. If there was a wall there he wouldn't have driven himself into it, he would have braked as he should and fell in line in 2nd.

Yellow flag was out pretty much right away (it was on the screen basically soon as last car went by the incident). Safety car was called around turn 19-20. Screenshot is just before it was called. Definitely happened fast and wasnt a ton of time for Max to give the spot back. Perhaps the team could have told the stewards they planned to give it back after safety car restart? But who knows, it was a pretty clear penalty and just bad luck on the safety car timing for Max if he had thought of giving the spot back.

If Joylon Palmer has the telemetry from Verstappens car would you buy it?

It was always a “Hail Mary” move according to former F1 driver Palmer, who revealed telemetry data to show there was no way Verstappen was ever going to make the corner.

He explained in his F1TV analysis: “He [Verstappen] would claim, he did claim that he was forced off by Oscar, but actually you can see the damage is done immediately.

“He looks over to the left hand side, he knows, really, that he’s in trouble. The only thing left for him is to do a Hail Mary move around the outside, and basically hope either Oscar gives him a little bit of space.

“But actually he’s carried so much speed in here, he’s never really going to make the corner anyway.

“So the only other hope now is that Oscar also doesn’t make the corner, and he can claim that it’s some sort of big mix-up between the two, and they should just be able to leave with neither of them making the corner with Max back in front.

“It doesn’t matter where Oscar, he could vanish the McLaren, the McLaren could completely disappear and there is no chance that Max is keeping this car on the racetrack with that angle and that attack that he had on the way in.

“Not in a month of Sundays is he keeping that car on the road with his entry, but off he goes....

The former Renault driver backed that up by revealing Verstappen’s speed during qualifying on his pole position lap heading into Turn 1 was actually slower than his speed in the Grand Prix despite carrying a heavy fuel load and running the medium tyres.

“Max releases the brakes coming into the corner,” he added. “So through the apex of Turn One, he’s carrying now a lot more speed to try and sweep around the outside. And you can see him releasing the brakes where Piastri holds it.

“Max just has two tiny steps of it, but really he’s got off the brakes, and he’s just tried to swing the speed in in a completely ambitious attempt to keep the lead, and he was never going to keep it on the racetrack by doing so either.

And in fact, as we look at the data, you can see Max is actually even quicker on Turn One lap, one with 100 kilos of fuel, no apex and medium tyres, than he was on his qualifying lap the day before, on soft tyres, where he was about to get pole.

“Coming through the apex of Turn One, he’s actually carrying more speed, which again highlights quite how ambitious this move was and why he was very unlikely to ever be able to keep it on the track.”

Miami here to stay until 2041….they better make some changes in the next few years.

Also, Max is officially a daddy. Not surprised he’s out racing today but is a little odd but hey that’s why he’s a 3 time world champ.
