    afaik noone makes an optical emulator for em. used to be able to flash the ROM on the dvd drive itself to allow it to play backups but I bet that info and tooling is lost to time at this point.

    As far as playing ROMs, assuming the rom is complete, the console should play the same from dvd or backup. the game files are packaged in the rom as an .xex executable. I did run into the occasional issue but figured it was a bad backup on my part

    HDD size and speed is the biggest limitation, the og hard drives were only like 5gb or something lol. that said any cheap ide drive likely is more performant than the read speed of the original drives.

    hows your soldering? the modchips are only $35 or so and allow you to use a custom bios which youll need to install bigger hd, launch third party dashboard used to play backups and emulators, use ftp tools

    So there's a hit/miss with roms then

    I'd still need to replace the HD which, is a very small detail anyway as SSD are super cheap

    And a small solder job - plenty of experience doing mods on amplifiers (replacing and upgrading caps and resistors), just don't have any experience with heat guns if it requires pulling off a chip that doesn't have pins running through a PCB.

    Hmmm, may just make more sense getting an Xbox when it's cheap and just buying the one or two games I want to play on it.

    Sounds like it'd really only be worth doing if I'm saving a large library of games.

    most OG xbox games are sub $10 on ebay if youre only after the disc

    as far as ROMs go, they may be better now? from HD they seemed OK but last time i tried that was over 15 years ago lol

    I know the backups I tried to burn were most likely to fail, needed to do a dual layer CD rom just right for it to work at that time

    @chrslefty

    Patrick gave me the go ahead to give a couple sets of bumpstops for the 1st gen away so I need to see who's got interest

    I don't even have a burner; fuck I remember back in the day of writing discs at 40x and that was the shit :rofl:

    Yeah I'll hit up my cousin and ask if he wants to sell me back my original Xbox; I found PGR2 on ebay sealed for as little as $15

    Thanks for tagging me. I actually run a set of durobumps, im on my second set of the front..well the rear too. Apparently I'm pretty hard on them. I could give a comparison of the two if your sending some out to be tested.

    I busted my Durobumps and switched to Perry Parts a while back. Right now I'm mostly thinking about people who need new bumps but I guess it'll come down to how many people are interested. I've got 3 sets to send. A side by side comparison with the duros from someone who's hard on them could be a good idea for sure so ill keep you on the list.
