That surprises me a little, as that could open them up an age discrimination lawsuit. Similar reason why a company never gives anything but a generic "your position has been eliminated" BS excuse when they kick you to the curb, as saying the 'wrong thing' could lead to a wrongful termination suit. I've been laid off several times, and the only time I got anything other than "your position has been eliminated" was this last employer. I got booted by the IT Vice President directly, he didn't even tell my manager he was going to do it. He was new to the company, and quickly learned the entire company's IT / computing infrastructure was a total disaster waiting to happen (All the corporate data centers world wide had NO backup generators, and many of the PDUs were 30+ years old; application license servers were running on servers so old, the manufacturers could not support them because parts were no longer available; application servers running on OS's so old, the applications could not be upgraded,....) to name just a few WTF??? scenarios. Almost every major incident call we had during my 18 months there, we ran into scenarios like this. So when he booted me, he actually said "your salary is going to be put toward our upcoming Technology Refresh efforts". I said nothing, but my thought was "Really?? And my annual salary isn't even 1% of what all you are going to need to even get started on fixing this mess." I found out a few months later, he got rid of the entire Major Incident team I had built, and handed over the processes I had created to an existing external support vendor that was providing the Service Desk function. Of the 6 total people on my team, I was the only US based person, so likely I made as much as all the 5 others combined, and my initial thought was "ok, they decided to save a little money by shit canning me as the team manager, and give that role to one of my team mates in another low cost geography (eg: cheap labor country). Until a few months later, a couple of my former team mates connected with me on LinkedIn and told me "No, they got rid of the rest of us shortly after you".

My last day of work they took me out on a stretcher and a cool ride to the hospital. Don’t remember a thing about it , it really sucks having to be forced into retirement. On the bright side I get more time to fu&$ with you guys :D

I can definitely agree with your point that the folks in charge of the hiring don’t have a clue how to do the job and therefore can’t accurately judge who will be a good fit to hire. I see it a lot in my work. Very technical jobs yes but the people that succeed vs fail are almost always due to personality traits and not necessarily skills. If that makes sense. My job is very specific to this industry and I wouldn’t expect anyone to come in with the exact knowledge needed to do what I do. I would expect to find someone with the personality to do it - attention to detail, good with repetitive tasks, that sort of thing.
Come on over. Nice and warm by the fire

Nope, nice thing was my boss never called and asked how I was doing, I would check in periodically, leave a voicemail. They replaced me in six months, never bothered to tell me I was never coming back, some kid took my place. It took me to outright ask if I ever could come back, nope, that was 2 years later. Not really fond of big companies that break themselves up into smaller companies to avoid all the hassle of health insurance, retirement accounts , legal hassles.

Yeah, no one called me either. That is until I got the call the day FMLA ended at 12 weeks that I was terminated. That’s okay. Even being depressed, retirement life is better than the stresses of working life.

Things like this is why I’m “just here to do a job”
    I know I’m replaceable
I know they don’t really give a crap about me
I’ll do my job, do it well, but I’m not here to really impress everyone or make friends.

As long as you enjoy the work somewhat, that’s about all you can ask for anymore. Look out for #1 , do good work, be honest, save money and cover your ass

I worked at the same company for 36 years.

When I joined we were treated with value. Good pay, good benifits we worked hard for that company. Then mother X started talking about profits and saw us as a draw on the bottom line. But they wanted us to still do the same level of service. Some of the techs have been there 50 years. The new techs leave after 1 or 2 years.

    I'm going to stop now.
