4th gen Oil Change

It's probably more prevalent in the winter months as the engine is in open loop mode longer, thus running a richer mixture for longer. Besides running longer trips, and oil change when Spring comes around probably isn't a bad idea. I do mine in the Fall and then Spring, but my driving isn't near as much as most. I'm barely approaching 8500 miles in the year I've had my truck.

I'm sure someone will pop along with scientific data, but I'm definitely not that guy

 

Yeah. I'm in the same boat. I only drive mine on the weekends. About 4-5k a year.

(Does anyone know if the zinc reading of 706 means they are using breakin oil
which is a break an additive ) ?

 

The zinc is about what it should be the moly is elevated a bit most likely from the factory oil

Has anyone used this fluid extractor to extract the oil from the dipstick on the 4th gen Tacomas? I used this on my daughter's Subaru and it was a less than 10 minute oil change without a drop of oil seeing daylight. Out of curiosity, I did remove the plug and verified not a drop of oil was left in the pan.

I bought it probably seven years ago on sale for like $50, originally to do transmission fluid changes on a car that was inconvenient to get to the transmission oil pan. All of the cars I regularly deal with now besides my Tacoma have oil filters on the top of the engine and dipsticks, so I’ve been using it for them.

I’m due for my first change on the Tacoma shortly. I may give it a try to see how much oil I can get out with it, if only to see if I can avoid the splashdown other folks have been experiencing.

To be fair, it’d only be to avoid the mess and because I already have the extractor. You’ve gotta go under the truck to change the filter and you don’t need to lift it, so I’m not sure spending money on an extractor just for this would be worth it.

 

Those extractors do seem nice. But I would be dreading the cleaning process

 

Generally, I don’t. After using it, I’ll leave the tubing attached and rig it so the oil can drain into the basin. The smaller tube I usually use just so happens to fit nicely into the J-channel on the siding next to my garage door, so I stick it up in the air and pop it in there for a couple hours. After that, I pour as much oil as I can into a 5gal jug I use to ferry used oil to the auto parts store. Besides wiping it down, I don’t clean it any more than that. It’s been fine. I might consider actually cleaning it if I ever did anything with it I’d want to keep or reuse what I extracted, but that hasn’t come up.

Since Toyota oils stem from Exxon mobil has anyone considered the mobil 1 hybrid oil specifically designed for stop
and start engines like these models ?

I’m at 850 miles and about ready for the 1k change, and had my mind set on ultra platinum Pennzoil that I used exclusively on my 2016 but now considering
switching over to the specific nature of the additive package they introduce in dealing with hybrids.

Either brand has the same GF-6a type rating as far as whats specified in the manual

Since I will do my own oil change at 5k and then take it to the dealer at 10k for the freebie offered to keep it I guess
within their warranty loop ( all diy oil/filter receipts kept ) just in case ! They will of course put Toyota brand oil
in there, so what do you think of these fairly new hybrid targeted oils ?
If I stick with Pennzoil I still feel obligated to the 10k dealer change but switching brands in and out every 5k until the warranty is over has me wanting to stay within the mobil 1 (Toyota universe)

Any thoughts on these hybrid oils?

Not going to hurt anything as it’s API rated the same as most other top oils out there. Probably not a bad idea for an iForce max but if you do a bunch of short trips not getting the temperature up I’m sure there might be some benefit for a gas model.

I don’t have a gen4 but when I test drove one I noticed these get up to temperature very quickly, a lot faster than a 3rd gen. Now I know that’s coolant temp and not the actual oil temp but if the coolant gets hot that quick, the oil naturally would have to come up quicker too.

Just keep up the oil interval too, that’s the best preventive measure. My 3rd gen’s drive to work is 3.5 miles and maybe 10 min, that’s likely 70% of its use. Change the oil in 6 month intervals with the plain Mobil 1 which is about 3k miles. Send a blackstone sample maybe once a year and the report has never had a fuel or water problem or anything else for that matter.

I don't think there's much cleaning involved... this is after multiple uses. I've never cleaned it. I just fill and drain

As far as the hose cleaning goes, I just let the suction work all fluid out after it's done syphoning the oil out

 

Did my 1st oil change today at 1100 miles 20 mile drive oil was still cool when draining got my fumoto valve installed also.oil came out slightly dark.oil changes are pretty easy on these compared to 3rd gens

 

I’m changing the oil at 1000 miles.
As a young kid working at a Mobil gas station in 1976 there was an ad we had on the wall saying 25,000 miles between oil changes using the ‘new’ Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I’m thinking we sold it for around $4 a quart. It was considered super premium. Hardly sold any.
