Nah. Gators aren't that fast. If you're not like, right next to them. Run in a zig zag. They don't switch directions well. And they HATE crawling/slithering across concrete.

 

I DONT like alligators. It’s like family joke how much I hate them. Cancelled a canoe trip in the Everglades because alligators…

 

What are YOU talkin bout? Is this even the same conversation?

Black bears are basically big raccoons

I don't worry about them. That's why I said black bears are (were) not my concern.

But your comment about being big raccoons did make me finally sit and look it up. While their behaviors are similar it is a result of convergent evolution and not due to having the same genetic ancestors. I'm not a biologist but generally accepted that idea based on the people who were saying it. Both are part of the Carnivora order but bears are family Ursidae and raccoons are Procyonidae. Procyonids diverged from this lineage 30-50M years ago. Learned another new thing today!

All you need to know is you don't need to worry about outrunning a bear.
You just have to be able to outrun whoever you're with.

 

When I was in the Everglades on a week long canoe trip, we were tossing ham slices in the water to get them to come closer.

I had a cougar encounter in my late teens. Her name was Alison. Nice lady!

 

I definitely have a healthy respect for them. But, I think they're interesting. This was about as close as I was going to get to this guy.

Of all of the ones I saw driving through the Everglades, it was the biggest. Probably about 6' from nose to back legs, and it had some shoulders on it. Very cool, and terrifying creatures!

 

I think she was in her 30's, which seems so young now.

Now, I need to find the opposite of a cougar. What do they call women in their 30's who are into middle aged, blue collar guys?

I only drove through a small part of the Everglades. Long time ago.
In that section there were chained link fences to keep gators off the road.
It was weird seeing them sitting on the side, like we see deer.
