What type of coolant for 1998? Red or Green?

I do not have an owner manual for a 1998 Tacoma. I have a manual for a 2000 that says Toyota Long Life coolant (which I assume is red).

 

Why is green more preferable? Is it because of cost, long life or availability?

 

I really don't think it matters.... as long as you get the proper 'mixture' of distilled water & coolant for the appropriate level of protection, you'll be fine.

I would drain it and fill it with distilled water, run it, drain it again and then just fill with Toyota red mixed with distilled water.

 

sometimes it is false savings to use the cheaper green stuff. I know that in the case of the older Mercedes, you stick to their mix. It was formulated for the metals in the engine block etc...don't know if this is the case with Toyota

 

I just did mine and the toy long life at my dealer is $40 a gallon.

 

red is stock and what toyota wants


just use prestone 50/50 for all vehicles all types

 

the green costs more than the red.

 

Im sure its way more expensive than it was 12 years ago when this thread was created.

Why quibble over a 2-dollar difference? Use the red Aisin pre-mix from Zerex and be done with it.

 

Toyota Maintenance youtube channel and Car Care Nut always say RED

 

Once you replace everything with non-OEM you get to use generic orange

 

IF you switch from asian.....its the devil to get it out

even after 6 flushes over several weeks....it still keeps coming out pink
the aluminum gets like a velveteen coating over time and age

 

IF you do use the red, or any, just dont try to stretch it 7yrs......thats just stupid
