How can I find the tow rating on this aftermarket bumper?

The previous owner installed some pretty awesome bumpers on my Tacoma, but I have not been able to find the tow rating for this bumper. (See picture.) I've seen this type of bumper on other trucks, and I'm hoping one of you can give me an idea since nothing is stenciled on the bumper, and there is no sticker indicating the tow rating.

The bumper is welded to the frame, and the bumper itself is incredibly strong. The weak point, if there is one, would be where the receiver tube is welded on to the bumper.

I know that the first generation Tacoma's with the 3.4 engine are rated for 5,000 pounds, so I certainly won't go past that. But I also don't want to go beyond what this bumper is rated for in case it is rated for less than 5,000.

    Thanks for your help!

Looks home made to me. If so, you won't find any type of rating. That looks like a common style used on classic Broncos ('66-'77). 2x4 or 2x6 rectangular tubing and tapered.

shit aint tow rated, officially anyways

post pictures of how it attaches to the frame, and pictures of welds on anything connecting the bumper to the frame or the receiver tube

Rating: none. Tow at your own risk

Aftermarket bumper manufactures WILL NOT label a tow rating on their bumper because of liability reasons. That cuts them out and release their responsibility from any lawsuit equation.

The bumper is certainly more robust than the factory hitch. All depends on how it's mounted to the frame. That will determine how it compares to factory (5000lbs).

Having seen a lot of these around my area, I assumed that some company was selling them. If home made, the guy is skilled at fabing. But that may explain it.

So in your experience any after market bumper for off road use won't be rated?

That was my thought as well. I just didn't want any unpleasant surprises.

I'm only towing 2,500 to 3,000 pounds, so it's probably fine. I think I'll ask a local fab shop if they can ballpark it any better.

Correct. Majority of the aftermarket plated/hybrid bumper that replace the factory receiver will not have a rating. This is due to liability reasons unless the manufacturer in deed stressed & load test the bumper. If it’s tested, you’ll find a label or information online.

I think these were a little pricey for tacos back in the day.........you know back when before the prices went crazy...

think their main market were the 4 runners, sj's, bronco II, and the like

so might find more info on the 4runners forum.......altho none are as active as these

It would really be nice to see how they attached......
if noting is offset....it could hold a lot
I'd be more worried about the antique transmission

if you put one up front....you could have a Chinook carry you around
