    @TACOTU3

    Just an FYI

You do not have to use an angle grinder to prep surfaces for welding unless they're rusted, or you're needing to add a bevel.

Mil lscale is something I've never bothered to remove (and never will) because welding burns right through it; just add a little more heat.

Good example of hot rolled, no prep, and just running fast and hot -

When you do use an angle grinder, stick to flap discs.

Grinding wheels are only necessary when removing tons of material.

Thanks for the insight! YouTube university can only take me so far, otherwise I need to see it happen or live through some mistakes…

Also, you should have at least 2-3 angle grinders.

I have two battery operated angle grinders with flap discs, and three corded angle grinders with different wire wheels and flap disc.

It's a good habit to get into having multiple angle grinders with different tooling so you spend less time swapping wheels, and just getting shit done.

@TACOTU3 If you've got a small press at home, you can do your own bend test for testing your welds.

The simplest one would be a simple open root 1G test where you bevel two thicker pieces of steel, place a landing (a small flat and squared edge in lieu of a pointy edge for weld metal to deposit), create an even gap between both landings, and a strip behind it.

You would run a root weld, which fuses and fills the void between the two parts, followed by hot passes which are passes the fuse the root weld to each side of the base metal, and cover passes to fuse it all up.

A visual test is easy, but the real test is once you cut a section or two out and bend them. If they crack/break then it's an automatic fail.

A carbide cutter on the Milwaukee to enlarge holes in small spots has been a dramatic improvement in my life for pump alignments

Why enlarge a hole when you can have the appropriately sized one to begin with :luvya:

Because when you try to align some old pumps the factory holes wont let you get the movement needed to get the alignment especially when its on a steel rack and thats sag or warp. Some times you just need a little bigger hole so you can get that .001 tolerance on the shafts

Two is too few, I'd opt for at least four

Three is nice to have but a fourth works as a back up when needed

This was some 4 years ago (time freaking flies).

I haven't done brazing or used oxyfuel for welding in a minute. Just cutting with oxyfuel.

Yeah ive seen seen some pumps easily out of the 70s or old.
Pumps mounted to concrete bases seems to be ok. But pumps that were on metal frames tend to sag just enough to cause some pretty bad misalignment.

some guys like to use smaller hardware to get the play. Or pull the whole motor to drill the holes bigger. I find if i just float the motor enough i can get in with a bur and just enlarge the hole enough in the direction i need to go
