Trailhunter snorkel whistle - Annoying

The making fun of the RAI on this thread is comical. People act like RAIs are new. It’s because it’s a TH and everyone wants to shit on it. Many vehicles get RAIs — Landcruisers, Grenadier, Range Rover to name a few — yes they are RAIs (NOT “snorkels”).. they have benefits. You don’t need to have one if you think it’s excessive but folks have been running RAIs for over 50 years. There’s nothing “fake” about it. Even the third gen pro had one for a while. It’s just a joke at this point the level of hate lol Jesus.

Something to note - per Toyota, it's referred to as a "high-mount air intake". Just FYI - not intended to be "point the finger" or negative manner.

The alternator and the airbox are basically the same level on the Gen 4. The airbox slightly higher, but the alternator is towards the top of the engine. I think this was intentional so the water fording depth was maximized. That would put it somewhere around the 36" mark. Of course, this doesn't matter to me since the only water I get into is when I spill my Evian in the cup holder.

 

Hmm now thats a thought. Forget the dump near the rear diff, let’s get some stacks in the box.

 

This is pretty much me. I would not attempt a water crossing in any vehicle I own unless my life depended on it. Raised air intakes aren’t a bad idea if you do a lot of off-road driving in very dusty conditions.

 

I’m picking one up in a couple of weeks and the raised air intake was the only point of contention with the Mrs.

I was thinking that if it’s becomes annoying enough I could replace the air box with a standard version and short circuit box the “snorkel”. But I’m really interested to learn a little bit more about your solution here. Can you provide an update and then the other detail details on what you did?

 

Removed the rubber plug on the air filter housing you can't miss it Removed air filter housing from the truck and then the air duct to the snorkel pretty straight forward, this piece connects to the one-piece snorkel tube, at that connection point I removed 4in of the tube and expanded the end in case I wanted to put it back later on, sealed off tube to the passenger side, reconnected the air box and air tube to the inner fender and now if takes air from the inner fender and from the plug removed from the air box. Still hear the turbo spool but windows down problem is gone.

 

it’s really not bad with the window closed. Does she complain about it? The snorkel turbo sound is kind of the heart of the Trailhunter

 

The wife is concerned with an air intake on a $70k truck but not that it's a $70k truck? Does she know the $50k can be had with out the intake?

If you buy a Trailhunter you can't be concerned about the noises it makes. You want quite get a GX 550 or Capstone Tundra.

 

Agreed. I don’t know any other production vehicle that sounds like it. I love it. The kids love it. It’s super fun.

 

24 hybrids don't have an alternator. at least mine does not.

 

ah - that’s cool info - I get why toyota is cagey about releasing that info but I’ve seen THs go through high water without issue (on YouTube at least)

 

People who drive turbos spend a lot of money to hear the whistle you get to enjoy it while driving I would say give it some time to see if it grows on you, if it doesn’t your shit out of luck.
I do understand the whistleblowing is better on diesels but still enjoyable.

 

I just picked up a 25 trailhunter. The whistle is annoying. It’s not like a performance turbo spool sound.

 

I’m all for turbos, blow off valves, loud pipes, etc… I’ve had a couple stage 3 upgrades on track cars in the past. It’s not the sound of a turbo that’s annoying here it’s the high pitched flute whistle and proximity to the passengers ear with the windows open. It’s a daily driver and an off road rig, not a performance sports car, and this does not offer any real performance in most environments.

 

You don’t like the blow off sound with the window down? I think it’s cool.

 

sure - but with windows up it’s not bad. And the blow off sounds good. Yes the intake whistle sound isn’t that cool but I’ve never felt the need to silence it. To each their own.
