    Working on my 1997 4wd 2.7l tacoma;

    Soo im doing my own head gasket job after someone worked on it but didnt put enough care in; reused head bolts, used grey silicone sealant instead of the oil pump o ring, and cracked the harmonic balancer by bolting it down without lining up the key.

    Got it to top dead before taking it apart, but when i got the timing cover off, none of the marks were lined up. He also replaced the whole timing set, so i cant be certain how he lined up the timing before putting it back together.

    I have to take the crankshaft gear off to replace the key, and im not sure how to be certain the marks on the gears match the internal timing.

    Ive taken off and rebolted the left balancer bolt to ge the chain off to see if i could get to the key, had to adjust a little but pretty sure i put it back where it was.

    Do i just turn the crankshaft to get everything to line up? Im not farmiliar enough with how the timing is set internally to be certain enough to put it back together yet.

    I could realllly use some help, he kind of screwed me, he said he would help with the repair a second time and ghosted, and ive been stuck away from home since december because of this.

    Thank you!!

    I dont know Toyota engine like I know ford but if youre talking about timing marks on the chain or belt lining up with the gears, you will never get those to line up.
    If youre talking about cam gear marks to block marks, try again, maybe you really dont have it on compression stroke tdc.

    If they dont line up, turn engine over by hand clockwise 1 complete revolution & see if they line up then....

    @slater talking about the gear marks lining up w each other / and the block i suppose? The head is off so i dont have to worry about the exhaust stroke or valves right now.
    I also turned the engine over a small amount with the right balance shaft bolt, and not sure if i can to/can turn it backwards

    Yeah just turn it until the marks line up, then line the cam gear up with its mark, then put the timing chain on. Pop the tensioner out, and give it a few rotations To make sure nothing touches and it spins nicely. Line up your crank mark and make sure your cams line up as well. Then send er. If you are only talking about the bottom end, just turn it to the mark and make sure cylinder 1 is at top dead center

    minor turn backwards after its apart "timing out of the equation" I dont think will hurt anything.
    Generally always best to always rotate clockwise.
