My 2.7L runs at ~190-194°F. Highest it's been is ~197°F, according to Ultragauge. My '14 Subie with electric fans waits until it hits 212°F before fans kick on and lower to 190-194°F. This bothers me for some reason.

The rated temperature of most all automotive thermostats is the opening temp--i.e. the temperature at which it begins to open. The fully open temperature may be 20, 25 or even 30 degrees higher. Depending on a number of variables the equilibrium temperature (the temperature at which the radiator is dissipating heat as fast as the engine is producing it) is typically 10 to 15 degrees higher than the t-stat rating...

I’m having the same issue. My truck ran at 185 for ten years. I read where you were supposed to drain the fluid from the block when servicing the cooling system. I had never done that. So I Drained the block and refilled the system. it’s been a nightmare. It now runs at 210. I’ve “ burped” the system, with the heater open and on. I make sure it’s full. I’ve Been though 3 thermostats and it only runs at 185 without a thermostat.
    Any ideas?

On the first gen V6 (3.4L 5VZ-FE), the thermostat was free of the housing and when guys went to install it, some would put the "jiggle valve" at the 12 o'clock position (facing up) because that's what common sense dictates. However, they'd soon notice that their trucks were running hot. Strangely, the position the valve needs to be placed is in the 6 o'clock position (facing down).

Pretty sure you can't install the thermostat wrong on the 1GR-FE (just did my wife's this past weekend with water pump, hoses and belts) but I would check that it still looks like the old one (if you haven't thrown the old one away). You can also check that they both open at the right/same temp. Start boiling a pot of water on your stove and add the thermostats. Monitor the water temp with a meat thermometer or the like. When the pot of water gets to 180ish + - degrees, make sure the thermostat is opening.

The Scangauge comes with some velcro too.
This is the hottest water temp and intake air temp I've seen on my truck. It was pretty hot outside, AC on max, sitting there idling in park for about 15-20 minutes. It was only 109 outside. During normal driving it usually runs at 184-190.

    Morning,

I have a 2.7L on my 2013 tacoma. I would like to know what is the engine oil operating temperature that you see with your ultragauge.
I would like to buy an engine oil cooler with a sandwich plate (thermostat opening at 180°F) for the texas summer. I am in west texas and it's really hot. I don't want to spend money on a blow head gasket .

    That's my only vehicle.

    Thanks a lot

My 2010, 4.0 with about 135,000 miles with original thermostat runs 180 in cool weather and about 190 in warmer summer type weather, according to the Ultra gauge.
I blew a short radiator hose in our '07 HHR and decided to replace the thermostat at the same time and I put in a life time warranty O'reilly's, it lasted about 6 months, then I went with a life time warranty Auto Zone and again it last about six months. I ended up going with a OEM from the Chev dealer. So far okay, but I have noticed an operating temperature range varies quite a bit, but it could because I'm more conscious of the coolant temp after the hose blew. City stop and go traffic the HHR will run about 210* or so while on the highway about 180*/190*. If not broke don't fix.

Neither the 2.7L or the 4.0L have an oil temperature sensor, the engine oil temp displayed in engine data would be a calculated value not the actual temperature but in general engine oil temp will run slightly higher than coolant temp.
As long as you keep your coolant temp in check there should be no need for an oil cooler on the 2.7L.

With what temp t stat in place?

If the right one, then there are lots of other basic cooling things to check out, as that is a bit hotter than it should be in modest weather.

Fan clutch. Radiator cap. Water pump. Radiator flow. Old hoses that collapse with suction. Debris in the condenser fins, between the condenser and radiator and in radiator fins.

    Just other places to look

206 degrees with the A/C on is not a big deal. These cooling systems can climb up into the 220 range just going up a long hill and somehow the engine still goes 300k miles

If the temp gauge never moves past the normal 12 o'clock position everything is fine.

206 is definitely over the limit. I really want to know the actual temperature of the engine oil for real
