Definitely sounds like much of urban MT is getting "Californicated". People these days have this misplaced sense of entitlement, in that they feel a low end, no skills required, minimum wage job should actually be a career goal, something they can live on and never need to consider trying to make anything more of themselves. I've had this argument with people before, who don't understand the concept of what these types of jobs were meant to actually be, and have the opinion that ANY job should pay enough to make it a lifelong sustainable income. And then you have State governments that promote that idea, such as my home State of California, where the current Governor decided that all Fast Food establishments (with a tiny number of exceptions) in CA must pay a minimum of $20/hour. I saw a news article this last week or so that some other State brainiac (from a different State) has suggested that the Federal Minimum Wage be raised to $50/hour. That would be slightly more than $100,000 a year income! Which would of course instantly bankrupt 85% of every business in the nation.:frusty:

I didn't notice and smoke in the air on the trip north to Carlisle. I traveled straight north on 94.

It's sickening how the local governments will create more "service" jobs that exist to kiss the asses of the wealthier that drive up the property prices and force out the locals of their own towns but then decry how no one wants the jobs. Here's an idea- for every californian that buys a property in any of your towns, they should have to volunteer a certain number of hours doing the jobs that the displaced locals used to do.

It’s like that anywhere nice, you should see the Lake Michigan shoreline. Even the little lake we’re I live. They take an old crappy 800 sq ‘ cottage and add 1500 sq ‘ feet to it. At least the township made them install city sewer, the lake is a little nicer

    Good evening,

I have been working a bit on the new mailbox post and stopped to go get a new mailbox. Damn, those things aren't exactly cheap. It was $60 for the least expensive all metal construction that had thick enough metal to survive a bird landing on it.

I was doing hand sketches on the posts, trying to figure out what type of joinery to use. I decided that it would be better to fire up my old 2014 Solidworks and have a go. I'm limited to making a depth of cut at 2.5", so it's kind of dictating what I can do. I wanted something better than a basic butt joint. I came up with this, while it would be very strong I'm not so sure about the aesthetics of the joint. It's almost half of a dovetail on a large scale.

I'll use a 4x4 for the diagonal brace, I designed tenon joints on the ends. I was looking at the joinery used in timber framed buildings, most of that I have never seen before, no idea how to even begin replicating some of those joints.

I'm done for the evening, maybe I will think of a simpler way tomorrow.
