New to group. Have a Gray paint issue. Has anyone else had a problem.

New to group. Have a 2017 Tacoma Sr5 Gray with paint coming off the top of the cab. Anyone else had a issue with this. I'm told they only have a problem with white.

If you are in Texas, Arizona, socal, or Florida and park outside, I would be surprised if you didn’t have a clear coat issue

 

I'm in WV. Toyota tells me they don't have any complaints about Gray Tacoma. Just white. Mine is almost down to bear metal.

 

Any previous paint work done to the roof?

 

No it is original and no dents or scratches. Looks like the paint just wore off?

 

You can go to wrap company, and they can put wrap on your cab roof of your color choice. Then move on.

 

I want to keep it original. My truck only has 40,000 miles on it. Why can't Toyota admit they have a paint problem and have it painted. They did with white paint.

 

Your truck is eight years old. You have a cosmetic issue on the roof.
A repainted roof would no longer be "original" anyway.

Ace 10 that's true but it would be better than covering it with a wrap that might peel later. I'll have to get a picture I don't have one right now.

 

Taco Joe bro. Toyota has a campaign that is good until 2029 to repaint White Tacoma trucks. Roof bed and fenders. If all three show signs of issues they will paint the whole truck. I talked to a customer service rep st Toyota.

 

I understand but you will have that problem again down the road. The wrap solves that problem. But it's up to you.

 

I’m aware of the campaign, I’ve just never heard of anyone actually getting Toyota to repaint their Tacoma. I personally know two different people that got their RAV4s repainted, I just don’t think Toyota is eager to repaint Tacomas for some reason. Probably what solidifies my doubts, is when they changed the paint color from “Super White” to “Ice Cap” (same paint code 040) in my opinion, to distance themselves from the problem.

 

Taco Joe bro. The body shop I took mine to is the one that told me to call Toyota. He's painted several White Tacomas and Highlanders but only in White. I was told to do it right the windshield and back glass have to be removed. 50/50 chance of braking the windshield and 90% on the back glass .

 

Unfortunately this is not too uncommon. There have been several threads on the roofs where the clearcoat has left the chat. At this point Toyota will likely do nothing.

 

That's what they told me. I would like to know if anyone else has issues with paint besides white. They have to have so many complaints before they will address it. I have pic's but don't know how to share them to the forum

 

PLEASE CLARIFY...
Is it dark metallic grey or is it light metallic Silver???
Light metalic Silver usually fails before dark metalic gunmetal grey....
Only reason I ask, some people may refer to silver as grey.

Heres the hood of metalic silver, roof looks the same...

 

It is dark. I have pic's but can't share them. Not tech savvy enough. If I figure it out I'll post.
