Life changes… considering a 2023 i4 double cab SR

This is the lowest price 2023 within 500 miles that I have found that hasn’t been in an accident or already had 3 owners, I have been shopping around a lot to even pull the trigger to have it shipped here for a test drive.

 

I’m checking out the truck today. I ran the vin on Toyota website. It came back an SR5 trim not an SR.
It also says it has a Limited Slip Differential; I thought that only comes on the TRD sport trim level.

 

It's electronic I'm pretty sure. They stopped doing mechanical LS back in the 2nd gens if I recall correctly.

 

Every Toyota & Lexus sold in the US for the past 16 years has "limited slip differential"; it's electronic, brake-based.

 

The 2.7L got dual-VVTi for 3rd gen, so it isn't entirely the same as before. Listen for cold start timing chain rattle. Seen a few reports of this on this forum.

 

This was my thought too, but it clearly stated limited slip differential not Auto-LSD or eLSD. I’ll look carefully at the brake actuator I don’t know why Toyota would list electric brake actuated traction control as limited slip differential, seems like false information.
Again I don’t know for sure I’m just looking at the option list online, and trying to understand what exactly is the configuration.



A little deeper it is clear it is AutoLSD. That is fine and actually a feature I was concerned it might not have. Given the boat ramps I will be frequenting I want to be sure I at least have some sort of multi-wheel engagement.

 

I have a 2022 Tacoma SR double cab 2wd with the 2.7 liter I4 engine. It has plenty of room for the family. The back seat easily fits 3 teenagers. Now I have 34k miles on it, and it's been very reliable for the 3 years I've owned it. Bought it new in 2022. I plan to keep it for at least 10 years/200k miles. It's not as fast as the V6 model, but it seems fast enough around town. I don't use it for towing. It has to shift to lower gears going uphill, but it doesn't struggle. The 6 speed auto trans works very well with the 2.7 liter engine. Sometime it shifts a little rough into 4th gear when it's cold, but no problem once it's warmed up. I was averaging 25mpg on the highway and 22mpg in the city, until I put larger all terrain tires on it. Now gas mileage is more like 23mpg on the highway and 18mpg in the city with 265/70R16 all terrain tires. Stick with 245/75R16 highway tires if you want better gas mileage.

 

2TR-FE (4-cylinder):

In Summary:
While both engines offer reliability and durability, the V6 (2GR-FKS) generally has a reputation for being even more durable and capable of reaching higher mileage compared to the 4-cylinder (2TR-FE).

 

got a link to the Carfax?? That is a must have before buying used especially if you arent going to have a trusted mechanic do a used car inspection.

 

there is a lot of squirrely stuff with the vins on these trucks as they were closing out the 3rd gen in 2023 you really have to know what you are looking at on the 23s. Some SRs are even marked TRD and such when you lookup the VINs.

 

Carfax is clean, it was a fleet truck maintained, on schedule as it shows. No issues with floor or accident.

Price is at $29k which is much lower than other 2023 SR5 I have seen even for the 4cyl. I am not sure what to make of it. The truck is a WANT right now not a need. So I am looking at the lowest cost and mileage newest 3rd gen I can find.

 

that a pretty good price depending on the miles for around here in south Florida anyways. Any factory powertrain warranty left Incase some engine trans issues arise after purchase?

 

No 3rd gens have a mechanical LSD dude... get a 4x4 if you need traction.

 

Bro WHAT NONSENSE IS THIS

The 2GR-FKS has the reputation for leaking from every orifice, grenading a cylinder on steep inclines, the rear plastic coolant bypass pipe will 100% fail at some point, the issues go on and on and on.

I've never seen a million mile 3.5, but plenty of million mile 2.7's.

The 2tr-fe has been around for 2 generations while the 3.5 was scrapped ASAP because it's such a pos.

We've used my double cab as a road trip vehicle but it's cramped. I'm the tallest at 5'8." In a few more years when our 13 year old gets a bit taller it'll be miserable.

 

2.7s had a cake life due to payload and tow restrictions. they aren't being worked. what do you think will last longer a semi without a trailer going back and forth across the country or one always pulling 80k lbs regularly.

After having driven cross country for a snowboarding trip as a solo occupant. I would advise against a long term hold of a Tacoma if you intended to use this for any form of long distance travel as a family of 4.

 

2.7s all day long I remember

 

3rd gen is good for about a 1hr round trip lol. 4th gen might get you an hour and a half lol
