Here is what AI says. Id try to find someone to quote 6.

Here's a breakdown of what's involved in replacing the oil pump on a Toyota 5VZ-FE:

    1. Preparation & Disassembly (2–3 hours)
    • Disconnect the battery.

    • Drain engine oil and coolant.

    • Remove skid plates (if 4WD).

    • Remove radiator, fan, and shroud for clearance.

    • Take off drive belts and accessories (alternator, power steering pump if needed).
    ⛓️ 2. Timing Components Removal (2–3 hours)
    • Remove timing covers (upper and lower).

    • Remove crankshaft pulley (requires special tool or impact).

    • Remove timing belt (inspect or replace if worn).

    • Remove camshaft sprockets if needed for access.
    3. Oil Pump Removal & Installation (2–3 hours)
    • Unbolt the front oil pump housing.

    • Clean gasket surfaces and inspect components.

    • Replace oil pump assembly or rebuild (some just replace rotors/seals).

    • Install new oil seal (crank seal) and pump gasket.

    • Reinstall pump, ensuring timing marks are correct.
    4. Reassembly & Final Steps (2–3 hours)
    • Reinstall timing belt, making sure it’s aligned properly.

    • Reinstall crank pulley (torque spec: ~217 ft-lbs!).

    • Reinstall covers, belts, accessories, radiator, and fluids.

    • Reconnect battery and check for leaks.
    Total Labor Time Estimate:
8 to 12 hours, depending on experience and access.

A lot of shops recommend doing the timing belt, water pump, cam/crank seals, and oil pump all in one go, since you're already in there. Want a parts list or torque specs for any of these steps?

it could be just the crank seal weeping but there is a stupid whiny noise :annoyed:

does oil pump make an awful noise the higher revolutions are when it is starting to go bad

4 Signs Of A Bad Or Failing Oil Pump

dont think I'd move on noise alone...
I'd wait for one of the other symptoms

these engines have so many noises and ticks

what would be frugal is wait for time belt/water pump replacement cycle, and just do a whole round robin....

Any job you have to drop the oil pan is gonna be a PIA especially on a 4x4

I read in one of those threads......a dealer wanted $5700 to do oil pump in a 2018 tacoma

I think just getting the oil pan off, cleaned, and back on is gonna eat a 1/3 of that time

......so better hurry like hell on the rest of it

If you do it might as well throw a timing belt and waterpump at it while your in there. As others have said.

I looked up the part (if needed)
    A bit over 300$ MSRP
200$ through the various friendly online OEM discounters

Maybe it is just the crank seal, it does have big miles in service since it was last replaced

.. cleaned the caked dirt with oil found yesterday around the area to monitor
then found a new pool of oil seepage after a hard 200 mile run today...the high winds finally went away so it got some exercise in the aggressive speed range following the crowd :)

I can post pics of the seepage found in a bit

And if my ears are good.. with the lack of wind noise at highway speeds the awful whiny noise it's had for the past year at legal speeds sorta went away once we were doing 90... the lack of high winds really helped to hear
Shhhh..don't tell the sheriff about that, it was needed as part of DIY diagnostics

so if i see the oil light start to flicker i Must Immediately pull off the road and call for a tow... hopefully not too far outside of the city at the time!
it definitely can use a timing belt change, it has the miles and was planning it out for sometime this year in another 15k or so but going to have to move it up now after this oil seepage was found...

ok... here are some pic's from the other day

before cleaning it up a bit.

    20250426_150521.jpg

    oily dirty mixture

    20250426_155728.jpg

    20250426_150236.jpg

knocked All of this dirty off that 'shelf' area digging in there with the finger and degreaser on a shop rag

    20250426_155824.jpg

after yesterdays 'spirited' 200 mile run i checked the area and found This pooling up.
nothing has dripped to the ground as of yet...

well you wont get an oil light going down the road...unless its catastrophic...

it'll start flickering after its warmed up and idling at a light

Can you post another picture of that leak but zoomed out? I can’t tell where that is.

I was researching cam and crank seal leaks for first generation Tacomas when I was taking care of my timing belt and water pump to see what people did to pull and install seals and also to see how common the leaks actually were. I was unable to find a single incident/thread documenting those cam or crank seals leaking. Everyone seems to be replacing them only as a preventative and never from them actually leaking much if anything at all. I didn’t pull parts to confirm there was no leakage but I didn’t see evidence of leaks below on mine at 170,000 miles. Therefore, I doubt you’re experiencing a meaningful leak from those seals unless it was installed incorrectly.

it looks like it is right under and behind the crank pulley
that crusty looking bolt head is for the lower timing cover (i think)

It may be just a small seep from the front of the pan that gets blown up onto the 'shelf' on the freeway...lots of wind
I went out this afternoon after I got back home and checked for same pooling and could not find it! Oil level looks ok
Ran a blind finger down in the area and could only find some small wetness where the front oil pan mates up right in that area
    :notsure:
