that’s good idea for passing down to your kid with warranty.

tell him to make sure the tailgate is locked and secured around the college campus. You never know the tailgate can be stolen which it was mentioned many times on here.

My guess is they needed to reduce the size of the fuel tank to make room for the battery on the hybrid models. But why they didnt keep the larger 21 gal tank on the non hybrids is beyond me

Range on 18.2 gallons is fine in my Trailhunter if all I’m doing is driving it with no real load. By the way, I drove this truck in Eco mode and made sure to drive it normally, never the first one off the line, but not hyper-miling either, for the first tank. I did hammer-down a few times on entrance ramps and for the fun of it. Mixed city/hwy came out to: 285mi / 14.085g = 20.27mpg. The TH doesn’t come with the air dam, so hwy mileage could be better. (Anyone in Denver take their’s off and want to get rid of it:)? I have 2000 total miles, the stock 33s and an Ibex bed rack and no other mods that would reduce range. I had the 2nd gen with 21 gallon tank with a supercharger and while pulling my Coleman 22’, 3000lbs trailer and a 1000lbs payload got 10mpg at 65mph in no-wind conditions. 10 miles per gallon while towing a tall and wide trailer is a very common mpg for any engine/tow vehicle. 175 miles was the best range I could hope for especially considering the SC shouldn’t be run low on gas, so I tried not to go much below ¼ tank. So, here is the real issue for a small gas tank: If you tow you will hit headwinds that will shock you as to how bad your gas mileage can be. With a 20mph headwind and driving 65mph you are now essentially towing at 85mph! That wind (usually I-70 across Kansas) and resulting gas mileage dropped my range to less than 100 miles.

No, the Tacoma doesn’t need a bigger tank in normal use, but I would love to have a mod that adds five to seven gallons just for towing purposes. I’d even be willing to put the spare in the bed so an aux tank could go where the spare tire goes - someone out there looking for a project? My only option when wheeling/overlanding is to use Rotopax fuel tanks, but they won’t fix the stopping frequently for the towing in a headwind issue.IMG_0217.jpg

No, they put both batteries under the rear seat which only took away the storage. I don’t get it either, they should have at least left the 21 gallon in there.

Maybe. My empty weight is over 5000 pounds too, so there was some reason for it. I’m suspicious that it was to save money though.

Hybrid battery takes the place of the under bench storage in the cab. That's the space you lose.

Imagine how much they're bitching on the 6G 4R forum, they went from 23.0 to 19.0 gallons. And why did they make an 18.2 and a 19.0 tank for the same TNGA-F platform?

Don't forget the 17.9 gallon tank for the new Land-cruiser, it makes no sense.

Is that 2x 2 gallon cans stacked or 2x 3 gallon cans?

The water tanks are four 2 gallon for a total of 8 gal. The fuel tanks are one 4 gallon and two 2 gallon for a total of 8 gallons fuel.
I didn’t need all that but I bought the whole kit for a screamin deal on fb marketplace.

I like the 4 gallon gas tank as I now keep it full when towing and have an electric transfer pump, which makes it quick and easy to stop and put extra gas in the truck tank.

I have more experience with the 4th gen fuel tank to report:
I recently took the TH and an 8 foot wide Coleman trailer to Moab, Utah for some off-road fun. The truck did a great job towing and wheeling, so I am very pleased with my purchase. That said, I very nearly got myself in a pickle with regards to the small fuel tank. I was averaging 10 to 12 mpg with a slight headwind for most of the trip. I got to a spot on I-70 that has no fuel for 60 miles and I thought I would be fine because both my calculations and the computer told me I had about 80 miles left in the tank, plus reserve. Then the headwinds became strong and in that 60 miles my range fell to 56 miles:confused:. (Not exactly as it happened, but simplified explanation) No, I hadn’t filled my rotopax and I don’t want to hear any monday-morning-quarterbacking from the peanut gallery:annoyed:. I got my fill of roasting from my friend I went wheeling with already.

So, pucker-factor moving up the scale with every passing mile and gust of wind, I soldiered on at 65 mies per hour in an 80mph zone. When the fuel gauge gave up the ghost and just posted a message “refuel now, idiot” I figured I still had reserve to rely on, welp, I pulled in to the first gas station I found and it’s a good thing it was downhill because I ended up putting 18.6 gallons of fuel in a 18.2 gallon tank. And, yes, you guessed it, I also filled the rotopax.:anonymous:

Ok, so it looks like the fuel capacity does not include the filler neck and hose. I was wondering about that.
I barely trust my gas gauge anymore and will only let it go below 1/4 if I have spare gas with me or I'm really close to a station. Last trip coming home from CA I stopped at 138 miles from home. DTE said I had 174 miles in range but that 138 miles also had a 3500 ft elevation change. When I added up the distance I'd traveled on that tank of gas and the DTE it didn't make sense with the current average MPG. So, I reset the display cluster. Gauge dropped almost a quarter tank and DTE dropped to 124. Got gas in the next town.
I really don't give a hoot about the DTE. I'd just like a fuel gauge that show the actual tank level. Then I'll decide how much range I have left.
