Hello, for a year, probably ~10k miles I have had this metallic ticking knocking noise at high rpms like 2k+. Also, at startup, mostly cold start, the engine produces a knocking noise for a slight second then goes away. Timing chain has been replaced and in great shape. Just recently replaced the oil and have been at 5k intervals with 5w-30 and oem oil filter. Also noticed that absolutely no oil came out of the filter when I did the last oil change. Wondering if anyone has opinions, or similar experiences. It’s also been to a shop and they said it was fine but I would really like a second opinion, since I’m leaving for college soon and can’t have any problems. It’s an 05 TRD OFRD has 145k miles. Thanks.

    What engine do you have?

What makes you think you have low oil pressure as you stated in your title?

I believe you are overthinking the non-problem looking for a problem.

No oil was in the filter? Was it [oil] warm when you changed it?

    What filters are you using?

I have 6 cylinder. I recently bought it from my neighbor who is really handy mechanically and he inspected it a bit and said that the oil pressure key that slides in on start up dosent immediately go on which brings out the knock noise on start up.

I waited 30 minutes after using the truck all day. Oil was still pretty warm. I did the change just as usual as I do it before, so that’s why I thought differently.

" Said that the oil pressure key that slides in on start up dosent immediately go on which brings out the knock noise on start up. "

None of that makes any sense.

What is an Oil Pressure Key?

    Slides into what?

What you do have is an Oil Pressure Switch that opens when the oil pressure is above the set point. If it drops below the set point it grounds the negative side of the Oil Pressure LED and turns it on. That is the extent of the oil pressure warning system period.

    See below:

Sorry if it isn’t making sense. I’m just saying what the guy I bought it from said. There’s this key that is supposed to slide into the gears. Sorry I don’t know much about it just was including it just in case for clarification.

I will look into that thank you.

I may just be overthinking this. Just don’t want it end up being a bigger problem in the future. Probably should do some more digging.

There is no sliding key that interfaces with the gears... The guy that you bought it from is not very well informed to put it mildly.

When the engine turns the oil pump turns and makes pressure. There are no sliding keys.

Nope. With no codes and it is running fine there should be no worries.
The 6 banger 1GR-FE is a noisy engine with a lot of ticks and things.

Yes, they are a bit noisy as engines go.
Keep your oil changed and check the level periodically, and drive it.
I sometimes don't have any oil in the filter when I change it. Usually I do, but not always.

    This.....

If the 1GR doesn't knock, tick, or rattle, then you start worrying.

He's probably referring to the locking pins in the cam phasers that should lock them in the home position when there is no oil pressure, if they don't lock then phasers will knock loudly on startup until they get oil.

Yes that sounds very familiar. Probably something of that sorts.

That’s exactly what it sounds like on some of my startups, not all. Some are loud like that but most are a little quieter but still there. Any more info on it?

Generally the longer it sits the worse it will be because the oil drains back over time.

Ford has a severe issue with it on the gen 2 3.5L EcoBoost engines, eventually the phasers destroy themselves if it's not addressed.

Haven't really seen that issue with the 1GR-FE.

The only way I know of to confirm would be to pull the valve covers, put a wrench on the cam, and see if they are locked in.

If that's indeed what it is unfortunately the only fix is to replace the phasers.

Though, symptoms have been present for pretty much a year. I know this VVT engines are just prone to producing noise and I haven’t had any negative symptoms other than the noise. No decline in fuel economy or performance and no codes thrown at all.
