I’ve recently been taking care of all the little issues on my 06 4.0 2wd. She was my work horse for years but over the last six years I only drive her maybe once a month. I resolved all issues but when I was underneath I noticed the dampener ring or whatever you call it that’s at the yoke and first u joint was loose. It’s been this way for years and would occasionally make noise so I removed it. Of course right after removal I noticed I had vibration during letting off the gas or when she would shift from 1st to 2nd with low rpm. I assuming I put pressure on something when I removed it. I went ahead and changed the u joint right there at it but that didn’t do anything. Any suggestions before I waste more time and money? 213k miles. Thanks for any advice

Are you saying you removed the carrier bearing?

Is that a serious question? If I removed that I don’t think I could move the truck. What I’m talking about is just a ring meant to keep dust out and help with very light vibrations

Where the yoke slides into the transmission there is a big ring, like 4” in diameter

I’m not 100 percent that every model has it but I know the trd packages do.

    The sleeve?

First thing I thought of, like, "what is this guy doing he's a real go-getter!!"

What are you talking about, the only dampening ring I can imagine, and at this point without a picture of what you actually removed, it is up to ALL our imaginations. Pictures, please.

@Strictlytoyz congrats, I thought it was a superbowl ring, because everyone says, those are really big rings.

It's literally just a dust cover. Should have no effects on driveline vibes. How's the carrier bearing play?

The new vibration started literally the day I removed it, carrier is fine. I’ll figure it out, I was hoping someone else had already been here before. All good

Me personally, I'd just change out the carrier bearing as well as the rest of the u-joints. Especially if never done before being an 06 model.

If you had to disconnect the driveline to remove the ring, did you mark the driveline before removal, and then reassemble in same relation? I.E., not rotating the shaft at the dislocation point by either 90, 180, or 270 degrees? Only thing I can think of...
