Truck runs great gets better gas mileage than my old 1995 4cyl Tacoma but the valve train noise always irritated me. Just drained and filled with Quaker State synthetic 10W30 and valve train noise is a whisper compared to before. I'm old school less noise is good. Anyone else done similar? Think my milage will take much of a hit? Anything I'm missing or failed to consider? Thanks for any input.

Its unlikely it changed anything, once warm the oil flows the same unless exposed to extremes.

The problem with 10W30 is winter starts, you'll have higher oil pressure than its designed to use.

I'd suggest 0W30 or 5W30, 10W30 is basically obsolete, theres no reason to buy it, it just sits thicker on cold starts when you want thinner oil.

I’ve had nothing but 10w-30, 0w-40, and 10w-40 in mine since I bought it at 4K miles. At 72K now and all is well.

You can use up to 15w-40 if you’d like. Whatever you use—your engine will almost certainly outlast every other component on the truck. Don’t overthink it.

Interesting, so the thick oil reduces that sound?

Winter here seldom gets below freezing. I did consider that though. I'll try 5W30 in the fall see if it stays quiet. Thanks

Why not just stick to the recommended 0W-20?

I always use 0W-30 and have used 0W-40 in summer.
Once that oil is at temp, the engine sounds no different than with 20 weight in it.

GM just told new 6.2 owners to put 0W-40 in theirs.

But GM truck engines are ticking time bombs. You will end up with lifters in the engine.

no, but that was a big complaint concerning noise with this motor, wasnt sure if you knew to recognize that particular sound.

That's a shame. GM used to build reliable v8's that were cheap to upgrade and a lot of fun.

Toyota used to build reliable V8, too.

They sure did. Would have been a fantastic option for 4th gen Tacoma's and 6th gen 4Runners.

The only reasonable explanation I have heard discussed here for sticking to the 0w20 is that the vvt system needs the low viscosity to prevent rattle on cold starts until oil pressure builds.

The factory manual has a table with various oil viscosities that are suitable to use up to 15w40 depending on temperature and driving conditions. Lots of stop/start traffic and towing would be considered hard use, especially in areas with high temperatures in the summer, indicating a much heavier than 0w20 oil to be used.

I've used 5w30 since my first oil change at about 900 miles. If I were towing or offroading with any relative frequency, I'd run 15w40 during that time period and switch back to 5w30 in the winter.

0w20 is to maximize fuel economy only in light duty use.
