I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 5-speed. I am wanting to get more power and a side project by swapping out the 3.4L with the 4.0L . I am wondering if someone has done this or how difficult it is to install?

If you have to ask, then it's going to be "really difficult".
Super charge the 3.4. It will be easier and less expensive.
    A good used 1GR is $4,000+ last I looked.

But what if I just wanted to research about the swap and see what other people know and decide what I do with it?

Then by all means do your research.
You say 4.0 swap, remember you need a transmission too.

Do you know how to weld?
Are you ok with having a custom driveshaft made?

You're going to need to do a lot of fab work to even get it to fit.
Then you'll need figure out the wiring.

Do you have wiring diagrams and ECM pinouts for both the truck and engine and transmission?

If you’re in a smog restricted state, make sure to chat with a state referee first before committing. If smog isn’t an issue, why not go with a ls3 or 2uz?

I doubt you’ll find many people, if any, that have swapped a 4.0 in place of a 3.4. Simply because it’s not worth the cost and effort, for an extra 50-60 HP that you could get by supercharging the 3.4.
If you already had the 4.0, the 3.4 was on its last legs, and you have the space, tools, etc to do the swap, then go for it. Otherwise, spend the effort to get some real gain.

Dont want to poo poo your project and if my words are too harsh, please accept my appolgies in advance...having said that, there are so many things that can go wrong that you dont think of right now, cooling and exhaust come to mind immediatly. If your truck is a rolling wreck and you have unlimited time and money then go for it. The way your truck is right now, it has some value to someone, if you do the mod and it is sucessful no one is going to want your frankenstein truck after you are done.
