I am such an idiot I changed my oil this morning then fired it up to check for oil leaks via my security cam I ran it for a minute and 53 seconds when I realized I hadn't put oil in it yet I immediately shut it off and filled it with oil it seems to run fine could I have done any damage.

Of course you could've done damage. Is the damage major or not, who knows. You'll find out soon enough though.

You could worry a thing sick or drive it. If there was damage done there's really no way to fix it, but.. You will never drain ALL of the oil out of the engine, all the little passages still had some oil in them and it was such a short time. I'm sure youtube has videos of people running engines with no oil, check that out for entertainment and see how long they lasted.

2 minutes is a long time to run without oil so it's quite possible you did, it may show up right away or it may show up some miles later.

My habit is anytime I change oil or mess with it I wach the oil pressure (light or gauge) when I start it to make sure I have oil pressure, then run it a bit and re-check the oil level and for leaks.

Never a good idea to be in a hurry changing oil, if your in a position where you have to be in a hurry save the job for a time you don't have to be.

No load it will be fine, in the really cold areas oil doesnt flow well and during warm up it basically has no lubrication for quite some time.

The big thing is load, no load, no problem.

We ran a Toyota v6 once for 20 minutes without oil, we had to put the throttle to the floor to blow it.

It may have damage, but I think its fine.

I'm a mechanic and I blew up a brand new lawnmower because I thought it had enough oil in it, don't stress it. Mistakes are part of life and its hard to focus with distractions.

Don't stress over it. I've seen a 2015 4runner drive through a carwash cause the tech forgot to fill oil in before taking it to car wash. He noticed the oil light on and pulled back into the shop.

I wouldn't worry about two minutes at idle, no worse than warming up the engine on a cold day in my opinion.

Just curious... was the old filter still in or a new one?

Curiosity question, have you been using dino oil, full synthetic, or something in-between?

    Sorry, that sucks.

Your truck is probably fine although you may have added a few thousand miles worth of engine wear.

It if were me for peace of mind.. I'd change the current oil after a shortened period and cut open the new filter to check for any signs of metal. Perhaps send the next couple of oil changes to Blackstone (for oil analysis) so you can know whether wear is increasing.

Sorry to hear man. I wouldn't worry too much about the blunder as others have said the oil stays in the engine for a bit so whatever extra wear you did shouldn't be too bad.

I had an oil filter gasket blow on my 1st gen. Parked at work and out of oil.
Drove it 1/2 mile to a gas station where I dumped 4 qts in.
Then drove it 1.5miles to an oil change shop. All 4 qts were gone after that 1.5 mile drive.
(Not that I recommend this :D)

    Truck was fine.

I think Mobil or Valvoline use to have a commercial with 2 engines side by side. One with their oil, one with a competitors.

They drained the oil with the engine running and timed it to see which engine seized up 1st.....
I don't remember the duration, sorry.

I was a mechanic for a few years and I did this once. Ran it for about 30 seconds then realized and shut it off. You're not the first one.
Put some oil back in it and drive it. It may be fine. If it isn't you'll find out pretty quickly.

I did this by accident once myself. Started it up to check for leaks. While cleaning up, the engine started to sound different. Quickly realized my mistake. Turned the engine off and filled it with oil. Restarted the engine and it sounded normal again. Never had an issue for the years I still owned the truck. I don't think it ran that long without oil, maybe a minute or so
