You know, the 4 wheel drive selector knob in the dash? I grew up knowing that real 4X4's have 2 sticks on the floor. 1 for the transmission, 1 for the transfer case. My '86 had 'em, my '96 has 'em, but the ol' lady's '07 has that silly knob. And it's not even illuminated! I had a hard time finding it the other night when I needed it, not being as familiar with her truck as I am with mine. It just seems kinda dainty to me. That, and first gear being too low-geared are my only 2 peeves with the new truck. Otherwise .
    End rant.

some of this, a little of that
I would agree with the complaint on it not being illuminated. However I like the switch over the physical handle. All of the trucks I have had in the past had it and I like the change. Also it is easier for my wife to just turn a knob to engage or disengage 4 wheel.

Although I grew up on the the sticks, after using the "knob" I find it does the same work without any problems. I miss locking in the hubs the feel of engaging the front, looks like your going to have to get a Land Rover or a G-wagen. :D

I love the older knobs better, my 92 cherokee had the manual shifter on the floor, it was basically next to my auto shifter and with the manual knob that you pull up it engages 4WD instantly unlike the stupid ass knob these trucks have nowadays. I have an 05 and i love it but i would rather have the older knob or handle, whatever you want to call it. call me ol fashion i guess, and im only 21!

My other toyotas were a stick, gotten use to the non-illuminated knob now and know where to find it when I need it, BUT when the electronics fail you are SOL. That happened to me last Spring & got it fixed under warranty @ 15k.

Never had a problem with the mechanical lever EVER in my 90 or 95 with 125k & 175k respectively.

EXACTLY! I havent had mine fail but I can see it doing it. Its just American people getting lazy. I am one of them but I would rather have the manual one over a electronical one anyday! Wish you could convert it to the old way, or special order it! haha

Yeah i wish i had a throttle cable still. Since I dont have a throttle cable and I have the new (whatever they use) Toyota has informed me that is causing my truck to have a harsh acceleration. It literally throws you back in your seat, and not in the "I drive a hemi" way. Wish I had that ol throttle cable back, wouldnt be a problem. Toyota wont fix it either, they just keep saying its one thing then the other and refuse to look at it

Yeah, I miss it alot. Turning a switch seems somehow less satisfying than pulling that stick. I can at least get my fix from the Jeep, but I miss it in the Taco from my old 2000. But then I like manual better than auto as well. Hard to find manual with everything I wanted, so I settled. Get my fix from the Jeep there too. I love both of my babies!

I don't like the electronic for three reasons.

    1. If you're already immobilized, your SOL. The vehicle needs a few revolutions of the front tires to engage. If you don't move, it'll start beeping at you after a few seconds. Try to keep your cool in that situation? I do NOT recommend the crescent wrench thru the radio. It doesn't work. Not an issue with my old 97 Tacoma.

    2. The loud clunk and shutter when it's engaged/disengaged. With the manual lever I can be off the gas, engage/disengage it, and get going again. Not a problem with my old 97 Tacoma.

    3. I used to be able to use the Lo range while towing a heavy trailer to get moving from a stop while on a hill. In 1st gear, accelerate, let off, push clutch in, take out of 4Lo and back into 2Hi, accelerate in 1st gear.,proceed as normal. A granny gear cheat I'd call it. The 08... It'll resort to beeping at you. Again, see non-solution to beep in first reason.
