I'd have to assume this combo has been asked about before, but I can't find a straight answer. I'm currently running 285/75/16 tires on the stock 5-spoke alloy wheels, and they rub the frame hard when I near full lock. My question is, will this size tire on a 16x8 wheel with 4" of backspacing and -12mm offset help this rubbing issue? To my understanding, the stock wheels are 16x7 offset +15mm(?). Will the extra inch of width on the new wheels make the tire just as close to the frame?

    The new wheels in question:

Yes this will help push them out away from the frame. They will get closer to rubbing the pinch weld instead so you may need to trim that if you haven’t already. A 4” BS wheel and a 285 should stay off the frame. I had some 4” BS wheels that the tires barely rubbed the frame but they were 12.5” wide.

Great, thank you for the response. Yes I have trimmed the pinch weld and can probably trim some more. Still trying to wrap my head around these offset and backspacing numbers, but I'm glad it can be done.

No probably. I ran a few different setups when I had a first gen. I found that 3.75” BS was best for 12.5” tires and 4” was best for 285 wide.

That wheel won't rub as long as your alignment is good. You will need a spacer washer as those wheels will rub the caliper.

Why would it rub the caliper? It’s still 16” but with more offset. Wouldn’t that push it away from the caliper?

They shouldn't have any caliper interference. I've been running that size setup for years on my '02. Some slight signs of touching the frame at some point, but it's so rare that I couldn't even say when it happened....maybe aired down wheeling, but even then infrequent and slight. Not at all daily driving. Ive never had any contact on the pinch weld area, never had to clearance it, but do have a 1" body lift. So maybe that's why.

You would think. I think it's the way the spokes dish that causes it. I have the same wheels but with the d window instead of the circles and it rubs the caliper.
