When Tacoma for 2 minutes with no oil I am such an idiot

what's done is done... toyota trucks are tough and durable... sounds like you dodge a bullet... i've had a company chevy S-10 suv's engine lock up and seize from lack of oil on the Ontario freeway in Los Angeles a number of years back... quite the unpleasant experience... never forgot that sound... i've done more idiotic things in life than you... my brother is dumber than my dog... we're still here...

 

I’d rather lose an engine than my job. Truly sorry for your loss. I’m sending positive thoughts your way hoping you’ll find a job better than the last.

 

This whole thread makes me rethink an engine rebuild I did on my kid's mustang after the oil pump locked up and he drove it home with no oil pressure.

Of course, since the engine had to come out to replace the oil pump, maybe I did do the right thing to go ahead and have it rebuilt.

No way to tell now.

 

The only objective data to help determine will be sending oil off. Everything else is a guess.

Makes me think how many times this may have happened while our vehicles are in for an oil change and nothing is said.

 

This, and stories of poorly reinstalled caps and plugs, is why I will never take mine to a shop. The one time I did, I checked both those things before even getting in.

 

Reminds me of a car I took in, years ago.
One week before a road trip I had the oil changed.
The day before the trip I was fueling up. While washing the windows I noticed some oil on the bumper. Opened up the hood and the entire underside was covered in oil.

They forgot to put the oil cap back on.
They tried to say it fell off. Only there wasn't any room for it to fall off. In the very rare event that the cap would have fallen off.....there is no place for it to fall.

The car wasn't showing any signs, that week, other than running warmer than usual.
It was an old car in the summer.
Ran fine the rest of the time I had it.

 

Did you cause damage? Not really. Not likely.
Was there wear on the engine when it ran? Yes - there always is.
Did you cause more wear than a standard lubricated 2 minute run? Yeah, probably. But if you caused 10X the wear then that 2 minutes felt like 20 minutes of lubricated running. So you only shortened the life of your engine by 18 minutes. Is that really enough of a difference to make a difference? No.

It's Friday. Pop a cold one and kick back. You have committed no mortal sin that you can't be absolved of by just letting it go.

 

My dad once filled up his diesel truck with E85. Truck had 1/4 tank of diesel before filling up. He drove that poor truck from the gas station pulling a 6k trailer until it died and costed it off the side of the road where he tried to start it over and over. In his defense the handle at that gas station was green for E85 which is usually diesel but still. I drained the tank, put a quart of trans fluid in the tank with new diesel and then filled the fuel filter with trans oil. Put 10k miles on it before they sold it with no issues. Good ol reliable ford 6.4 (kidding it was on its second motor when that happened)

 

Scary! But should probably be fine like the others stated.

In the future, when you startup after an oil change stay in the vehicle and first watch to make sure the oil light goes off, then go check for leaks. Confirming oil pressure is always the first thing I do upon start up for oil changes.

 

The oil he filled it up with after. Any metal would be in it.

Harsh, but fair.

A friend had a really nice 1989 Camry with about 183,000 mi on it. It was still in great shape. He brought it into jiffy lube one day for an oil change and being jiffy lube they didn't have the right filter so put on one that was close. It just wasn't close enough and it pissed out all of the oil on his way home. That was the end of that. And of course they said it wasn't their fault he didn't have the money for a lawyer.

 

My first motorcycle was a yamaha 2 stroke twin. I used it for a year then decided to change the oil. 2 drops came out, it ran better with oil in it. Live and learn.

2 strokes use oil with the gas, in its case, injected oil. So the top was getting lubed.

 

The one time I went to a Jiffy Lube, I had them install an exhaust system. I don't recall why I chose them over a real shop. (I think it was the only place that didn't care I brought them a tin can with a screen for a cat)

They actually did a ok job installing the exhaust, but they used the rear floor boards to jack up the car They were dented just enough to pop the drain plugs. I knew nothing about it until the first time I drove the car in the rain afterwards.
