I'm curious how many forum members have had difficulties with the CarPlay connection in their new Tacoma.

Mine will randomly loose the connection to CarPlay, sometimes after a few days and other times multiple times a day. it just suddenly disconnects from CarPlay and its necessary to go to the settings again and reconnect. Frustrating.

The dealer claims that it is the Apple software and I noticed that the most recent software update did mention CarPlay improvements, so I was hoping that it would fix the problem. But it persists.

I've tried disconnecting the phone from the truck (forgetting it), restarting the phone, reconnecting, etc. Doesn't fix it.

Unless there is something else that can be done to reset the connection and then re-establish it in a more reliable way, I am guessing that this will continue until we get a future software update for the phone that fixes it completely.

Anyone else having a similar experience?

Thanks! I'll try again, I think the fixes that the first article recommends are what I tried earlier, but no harm in giving it another try. The Forbes article sounds like for some people it may take another software update to fix it for good (one can only hope). We'll see how it goes. I appreciate the links.

I know this is for the 3rd Gen, but I assume there is a similar procedure for the 4th Gen. Feedback I've seen is to use the red cable if provided with your truck to connect via USB-C.

    reset to factory settings

It’s interesting in the first a few days I’ve had issues connecting but the last 3 weeks no issues so far. It connects right away.

I only updated my phone 3 days ago. Now I’ve got 3 rows of app icons showing on screen.

Next time you lose connection hold the volume knob down until the infotainment system reboots. Not sure if it will solve your problem but worth a try.

    I have a 2024 and don’t think I have ever lost a CarPlay connection.

I am starting to wonder if this is a phone version/update issue at all. I have the same issue as the OP with my Google Pixel 7. It'll connect fine for a few days and then lose the connection the next, do that for a few times in a row, then return to normal connects whenever I start the truck. There's no pattern, seems completely random.

It seems random but if it's happening consistently across two of the most common phones out there it implies that it might be an issue with the display's bluetooth software/connection.

    Thoughts?

I'm not sure what the significance is of using a 'red cable' - is that supposed to be something special that a normal USB-C cable doesn't provide? Because I always have my iPhone connected using the USB-C cable while I'm in the vehicle, and I think that the CarPlay connection is wireless in any case.

    Works great for me.

Common to have issues after updates. Best to forget the phone on the truck and forget the truck on the phone and start the pairings over. Usually fixes most issues.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've done all of them, will see how the CarPlay works next time I'm out driving around.

Negative, the CarPlay connection is over the USB cable if you're using the port on the right-hand edge of the display. I don't have wireless CarPlay enabled on my phone because I like wires.

I'm not sure because I don't own a 4th Gen. It was feedback I'd seen online.

Toyota, especially SETD, adds $79 package of four red cables to many/most trucks.

Of this set, two are USBA and can’t plug into a 4th gen Taco which is all USBC.

Of the remaining two, one is Lightning and useless on current iPhones or any Android, leaving just one cable that can work with current phones since it’s USBC to USBC.

$80 for a cable that you can buy on Amazon at two for $6.

They should at least provide some free lube when bending you over th barrel with those cables.

So when I got my truck last year I had an IPhone XR. Some days it used to be okay and some days it would be a real pain in my side. Disconnecting every few mins. A few months ago I got an IPhone 16E. Never had another disconnect. Has been flawless since.

That is something I was not aware of, and I haven't even looked at the other side of the display and didn't realize that there was a USB connection there! I keep my iPhone plugged in with the cable attached to the port on the center console.
