Every drop was drained out. Put in 5 quarts, the dipstick read up to the line. Ran the engine for a few minutes. 2003 base cab, 133k miles. Burns very little oil, been running fine these 19 years. Didn’t go a long times between oil changes. Good quality oil always used. I didn’t measure how much drained out. Anyone heard this happening?

Damn. That bums me out, tho you may be right. I almost now want to spend the additional money (just having done the oil change) and do the oil change again after adding oil sludge remover for a couple hundred miles beforehand, then new oil.

Looking at other taco forums, a lot of posters are reporting the same situation as mine, with many saying “something’s just not right” hehe. Others question the validity of the 2.4l oil capacity as stated by Toyota. So…I’m not sure what’s going on. New oil still looks clean and clear after a few days of driving. I’d expect the sludge would make the new oil a bit dirty if the engine was badly sludged.

Spec for a base 2.4L is 5.8 quarts, without filter 5.0 qts .

I may just wait till next year’s oil change and run some oil sludge cleaner a couple hundred miles before the change. Still bugs me tho. If 5.5 with filter is correct, my engine reading full at 5 isn’t gonna seize it up. Yes, there’s probably some sludge. The capacity is all over the place on sites. 6.2 capacity is on half a dozen site, at least. Every oil change place has it at that. Also, every auto store and oil manufacturer. Wierd.

I have 2.4....24k mi.......without the filter it takes about 4.2 qt

with new filter.....just barely under 5qt

    I change oil every 2k........filter every 8K

when using mostly new oil.....you dont need to change filter that often

unless above 200ish K.....where as you start getting very slight oil dilution
sooner if it wasnt taken care of early years

I have it down pat.....I buy oil from napa when its on sale for the next 3 changes

really dont want oil sitting too long....in the can or vehicle.....since I'm only about a 5K er a year.....

may sound excessive.....but who cant afford a $20 oil change

You should use caution- Anyone can make the internet say whatever the choose.

There is the spec from the Toyota Manual (https://www.toyota.com/owners/warranty-owners-manuals)
    upload_2025-5-2_19-31-12.png
    that's L (qt, Imp qt.)

No idea where 6.2 comes from, maybe a different model year, or another vehicle with a 2RZ-FE :notsure:

All the stuff on a 3rz engine is mostly on 2rz, with few exceptions

one of those is the oil pan on 3rz is larger to accommodate the extra load of the balance shafts and slightly larger displacement

the numbers.....all the numbers on 2rz, 3rz, 5vz get mixed up everywhere all the time.....specs and part numbers...

2rz owners quickly learn to keep the receipt and buy local for the inevitable returns

Same with 5 lug......they'll swear it fits.......but then it doesnt.......because 3rz 6lug is the default more times than not

by the way.....the spec's say I should have a gas tank 4 gals more than current one (2rz)........
so if anybody finds that 4 gals I lost....give me a call ....drop me a line

Thanks for that link. I Googled capacity (etc) and could not see ONE link like the one you posted. A guy at Walmart’s oil changing area took out his reference book. We looked up my EXACT year, model, engine. Book showed 6.2. quarts. I’m almost positive the Pep Boy’s nearby book would say the same. Probably the same as every oil change place in my area. My mind is at ease knowing some of my oil ports are most likely NOT clogged.

Yeah they may drain the tranny.....and double fill the oil by mistake

    like I said.......in a hurry

If your atf is not red anymore.......its pretty common

You'd think only getting out a couple of quarts would tip em off
    .....but ......in a hurry

Wait.....back to the comment about running sludge remover through your engine.

    Don't.

If you have high mileage and there is sludge in there, leave it. You absolutely do not want that sludge to pop loose and plug oil passages along the way. Good way to starve some bearings.

I used Walmart as an example that a lot of oil change places simply don’t have the correct specs in their reference books at their oil changing bays. Why? Who knows. Also, Autozone, O’Reillys etc. all say 6.2 quarts.
