I think it’s time for a regear. Looking for some 5.29’s.

Just bought a 3 ton pro eagle for the taco. I took it off and put it in my wife’s raptor a few months ago. Now I’ve got one in each truck again. Need to find a mount though. Pro eagle is out of stock

Regear is one of the top 2 or 3 things you can do to the truck. You’ll love it

Yeah I’m tired of how slow 500hp feels. Feel like I’d like driving the truck a lot more with more torque at the wheels.

who installed your gears? And what ratio? Some dude here in chandler has a set of 4.88’s. Heard those are stronger than 5.29’s

What are you at right now? For the 3rd gen’s, auto is 3.91, so 5.29 made more sense to me as a bigger jump. Plus, ifwhen you bust the rear, now you can drop a 5.30 ford 9” in with basically no issues.

The truck used to be MT, so 3.73 I believe. Factory 300k mile gears.

my other option is wait until I grenade the diff and then do this

if a 9” in the rear (wow, what a phrase) is what you’re thinking you’ll end up with, then it’s kind of a horse a piece on the front I’d think. I wouldn’t run mismatched ratios front and back, but I definitely notice a benefit from the 5.29s personally.

ideally I’d just not blow up my rear diff. But yeah probably. If and when, I’ll make sure the ratios match

    Hmmm…
My worthless opinion is you will snap the 5.29 pinion with the HP and Torque your built LS puts out.
I’m pretty sure Toyota had a 4.30 in the 8.4 that’s actually 8.25” that came in first Gen. Tundra with the towing package and I wouldn’t let anyone install gears in the Toyota differentials but Ken in Prescott! http://gearinstalls.com/
He’s the absolute best when it comes to Yoda’s… :hattip:

This should help you figure out what gear to go with!
    https://spicerparts.com/calculators/transmission-ratio-rpm-calculator

And personally I find a rear differential from a 3rd Gen. I understand they come with a 8.75” gear in some.
The guys from ECGS said they are beefy! Plus manual transmissions have a 4.30 gear ratio. I’m guessing it would be a plug and play into your 2nd Gen.

Yeah I’ve seen Zuk’s stuff before, I just don’t wanna have to pull the diffs. Hoping someone can take the truck and do it all.

nothing really plug n play axle wise. There’s so much done to my rear end, with spring perches, bump strike plates, gussets, disk brakes, etc etc.

I found a set of 4.88 here. I think I’ll just do those.

ECGS is like $3300 to get this done and I have to do all the labor. Gonna see if I can beat that

Per ECGS the 3rd. Gen. rear differential is plug and play… I a regular Taco but I forgot about all the suspension you have! :sorry: But you pay for the convenience! You have a connection to Toyota parts. ECGS posted the part number in the link. And again guys remember Pittsy has a built 5.7 LS6 he shouldn’t need gears that low.

    https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-23994891-tacoma-t8-75-elocker-complete-axle.html

I had a 3.31 with the 275/45-19 = 28.8” of P7 rubber in my five lug. It was awesome on the freeway with the Tremec but I couldn’t drive through a parking lot without the truck lurching big time and I had to slip the twin disc from a stop. It made a huge difference going to a 3.73. Now punch it at 45 mph in 2nd. Gear and it just wheel hops!

Mine are 5.29’s that Zuk did. Originally I went with 4.56 and did the ecgs core swap which is also a good option. Rear diff swap takes like 1hr and front like 2-3 depending if it decides to line up and squeeze back into place nicely.

Race car runs 5.13’s and feels way more powerful than mine. But also has 100 or so more hp so makes sense lol. 4.88 will be a huge change for you while not screaming on the hwy. 5.13 or 5.29 would just be a little higher rpm on the highway

Well shit. I can get a set of 4.88’s tomorrow for $500. Doesn’t really sound like that good of a deal. Any concerns with 5.29’s being too weak?

I really just wanna drop my truck off somewhere and pick it up regeared. I’m tired of working on it lol

I mean I haven’t had any issues in the last 3 years of abuse. But I have the tundra 10.5 rear end. Stock front still though.

Even with 4.88 you’re going to feel a huge difference.

Maybe I’ll just practice some impulse control and wait for a set of 5.29’s. I wanna do limited slip front and rear too while I’m in there

I ran 4.88 on my Tacoma with 37s when it was the stock motor, and it was good for highway and offroad. I did 4.88 again in the 9" diff, but wonder if I should have done 5.29 since I'll be running 39s, but also will have 500hp, so not sure how it all pans out.

Anyway, all that said, I did 4.88 since my original plan was 37s with the LS power.
