Wow, a rare semi-disgruntled 3rd Gen MT owner! I thought the MT was the end all / be all solution to the 3rd Gen's issues.

BTW, try driving one of those MT's here in the Atlanta area. Your left leg will look like a tree trunk.

I never had a problem with my 2016 AT. It was the best AT I’ve ever owned. But I love my 2020 MT much more. It’s just more fun to drive.

I actually traded my 2021 auto for a 2022 manual. Was really cool at first, but after a year I was over it. Wasn't a bad truck, but wasn't what everyone made it out to be. Someone else now has a well cared for truck and I hope they enjoy it. I am happy with my auto truck now.

I have radio gear on top of MT Washington at 6000, 288 feet, tight turns, no guard rails low range and a 6 spd manual works just fine.

I love my MT too. Love it so much and yes, you have to rev sometimes all the time.

There is a weird gap between 2nd and 3rd. 3rd can't quite do it and will rev high in 2nd. Most pronounced up hills.

Low range is a hoot with the manual in any situation where you are limited to under 30mph.

I’ve not had a complaint about the gap between 2nd and 3rd. I have had a complaint about the gap between 1st and 2nd, but I have adjusted my habits. I was previously familiar with manuals with no synchro for 1st gear, so first was only for taking off from a stand still. With the taco, I downshift to first on the fly with no worries.

They race rally cars up that mountain! They have a lot more balls than I do. Were talking serious speeds. Like I said no guard rails. Check it out. "Climb to the Clouds".

Agreed. Have to rev up to about 3500 before shifting into 2nd so you don't end up below 2K RPM where it's seriously lacking anything useful. The engine and transmission in this truck feels like a cobbled together afterthought but I still prefer it over an automatic.

I’m having a hard time agreeing with you, unless we are talking about racing or towing. I rarely exceed 3k during daily driving.

I love my 2022 MT TRDOR. After 1k miles I put sprintbooster on it, added TRD air intake and 6 months ago added HPS reinforced silicone air hose. It is a beast and a joy to drive. It will go up to 110 and still had oomps to go. I did not want to push crappy oem good year tires. With some very mild mods Taco MT is fine. I am not driving an auto (unless I am in the wheelchair) and pickings for reliable stick shifts are very slim. I will not buy an auto unless there is nothing else left and all my vehicles are trashed and unrepairable.

I have the same rig, i.e. 2021 6mt (sport, if that matters, OH! It's RED!)
I also drive up to the ski area 4 days a week , every week, all winter season.
Plus I live in an area where "everything is up hill both ways".

I like to keep engine revs around 2k, but am starting to warm up to the 2.5k range as normal. The engine seems happier ;-) Oh! I'm into gas mileage efficiency as well. 21 mpg tank average or I'm bummed!
What I have found is a real help, is to "shift early, shift often". I now shift down when the engine rpm drops below 2k and I'm still going uphill. There is just no ummph at rpms less than that.
Ummph is a highly technical term that takes into account BMEP, Static Pressure, Brute Force, and ignorance. ;-)

My subscription to Spotify has helped with my own sensibilities.

What I have yet to see, is any "TUNE" that increases the Torque or Horsepower value at revs less than 2500. Let the "butt dino" crowd raise their voices all they want. I require HARD NUMBERS. And the numbers I have seen so far "Just Are Not There."

Don't "gears" change the engine rpm in the same way that the OP objects?

    There is no free lunch,

And .. There is no replacement for displacement!

Not exactly, gears would shift the power and down so that he could probably use 3rd gear uphill but not rev as high as he is currently revving in the stock 2nd gear.

Ultimately he would raise the rpm he cruises at in top gear though, so if he’s against revs, then it’s not really a great result for what he’s after.

Zero issues in the power (torque) department over here.

I live up north, at higher elevations. Here i am going up hill in 3rd (light throttle application), towing my 6x12x7ft enclosed trailer with cleaning equipment inside (light load ~250 pounds or so) My truck is on e rated 33s, winch, bumper, sliders, roof rack and 2" lift and I just put on my steel bed rack and RTT ( total of about 550# constant weight) Plenty of torque at those RPMs. Not sure whats happening with some of your guys' trucks.

For the life of me, I cant figure out why so many guys have issues. Especially with the MT version. When guys say its underpowered I just cant wrap my dumb brain around that. I barely go over 4K RPMs, even when towing heavy and driving up steep hills. Unladen, my truck turns into a rocket past 4K RPMs. I love it.

I use my truck for all sorts of stuff and it does everything i ask it to with no sweat.

    This and that
I feel like they should’ve offered two transmissions in the manual. The OR should’ve gotten the rc60f they used in the fourth gen, and the sport should get the flat landers special that we all got. But they didn’t so…. :duh:

    What? :)

Seriously though, whats wrong with the 3G MT? I will agree R is high but it was also high on all MT pick ups I have owned. 2WD low mod solves that issue and I use it all the time.

I use my truck for everything (work and play), this MT works just fine. 2nd gear could be a hair lower but its a very minor complaint that it doesn't bother me.
