Trailhunter vs. TRD OR

I’m currently trying to decide between a Traihunter and TRD OR with premium option and SB disconnect with 6’ bed. There are lots of Trailhunters in my area with 6’ beds but I can’t find any with the TRD. I’m tempted to just go with the TH but I really don’t think I will like the whistling snorkel and I would eventually be getting rid of the roll bars in favor of a camper topper. Also the TRD is considerably cheaper. What other options does the Trailhunter besides the Old Man Emu suspension give you that the TRD doesn’t have?

 

Trailhunter has lots of standard worthwhile features in my opinion: Sunroof (Canada), 6' bed (Canada) rock rails, full metal skid plates (except plastic gas tank skid plate), more upscale looking interior, auxiliary switches, factory lift with 33" tires, Old Man Emu shocks, roof rack, hybrid powertrain, ARB sport bar, axle exhaust dump, rear steel ARB bumper, Heritage grill with light bar, dual color fog lights, high raised air intake "snorkel" (wife hates noise!)

Not everybody is going to agree on what is valuable to them so it's up to you to make your own choice(s).

 

TH is more cool than the TRD OR. Both are the same configuration not much difference there, sounds like the TH would be easier to find than the OR with the options you want. Sway bar disconnect sounds cool, but I didn't even need 4wd since I don't know when got buy this winter with out engaging 4x4, doubt I need the disconnect. I wouldn't entertain anything over a base Off Road Long Bed, discounted those list for under $50k. I would buy a Trail Hunter if I was in the mood to spend money, before going to a better equipped OR LB.

 

Thanks! That maybe enough to sway me. I have been doing a lot of camping over the last few years all over the US in a 2wd full size truck with a camper shell that has been tricked out pretty nicely and suits me well but I’ve been limited by the 2wd. I just got back from a trip where I was able to camp in some remote locations, one in Death Valley that was a little sketchy to get to in my truck.

 

The TH is awesome, no doubt. But I'm window shopping a Tacoma to replace my '21 Titan Pro-4x, mainly to downsize.
I have been through some seriously gnarly stuff in my big Titan. That truck is big, not really as serious off-roader as some other trucks, but I can't imagine needing more. Go through rivers and over logs and decent sized boulders like any other truck TBH.

I've been looking at a Tacoma that has at least a locking rear diff and 14" infotainment (I'm far-sighted) and 6' bed (for a cap, I sleep in the bed) that would be more than I'd ever need. Disconnecting sway bar would be great. Anything more serious and I risk getting too bold and possibly getting stuck even worse in a more capable trim.

With you coming from a 2WD, a more basic Tacoma would probably be a huge upgrade.

 

TrailHunter is the one I’d definitely buy with someone else’s money. If it’s your money, an OR iForce Max in Bronze Oxide is mechanically 90% the same outstanding truck at or below 50 grand with discounts.

Approaching 60k, I’d buy a RR, but then I don’t overland, would just use it to haul stuff, and haul ass.

 

Only major diff is suspension setup and TH has more overland gears n gizmos, TRD Pro does not have 6" bed, most dealers stock 5" TRD OR. Also price is major diff in OR vs TH

 

Those th rock rails are worthless & very non-protective...
I put them in the same category as the predator steps...

Something else to consider,
If youre going with a bigger tire the TH has an 18" wheel which isnt very a friendly size when youre shopping for a cushy tire to keep a nice ride on these trucks...
You will be stuck with a E rated tire with a very stiff sidewall, not what you want with these light trucks...

 

I think the biggest question is the powertrain - if you want the Hybrid powertrain AND a 6' bed, the TrailHunter is your only option currently. No hybrids in the OR trim levels that you can get with the 6' bed yet. Hoping someday Toyota realizes that not everyone wants a TH to get a 6' bed and the hybrid powertrain...

 

What's RR? Range Rover?

I could probably do without the hybrid powertrain. I mean the extra torque is nice but it's something I would probably be fine without.

Is the "Bronze Oxide" a special trim level?

 

If you plan on putting people in the back seat, the TRD Pro is eliminated.

The TH is the only hybrid 6’ bed configuration.

You lose ALL under-seat storage in the hybrid models.

A 6’ TRD offroad non-hybrid would probably make the most sense.

 

If I could find one with the premium trim, I would definitely give it serious consideration. But so far, I haven't found anything close within 250 miles, and I can't get Toyota's website to load within 500 miles. I don't want to wait for them to build me one either.

 

From what I have read, the TH intake has a cap covering an opening in the front. You can remove that cap, disconnect the snorkel tube from the back of the intake, and then use the cap you remove to cover the snorkel hole. Not a perfect fit, but it works. Alternatively, you could get a TRD intake and swap out the whole box. Not cheap, about $600, but you'll gain back the 3hp the TH loses with the snorkel.

The TH is more money, but it's a nicer truck and should retain it's value so if you can afford it, go for it.

 

I'm very happy with my bronze oxide TRD OR after one year and 15k miles. My opinion is that if you plan to mod it, then don't bother with the Trailhunter. You would be replacing all the special parts anyways.

It's also funny that a lot of people assume my TRD OR is a TH just because of the lift and color...

BS. I’ve had bolt on sliders from Demello, Allpro, White Knuckle that all mount similarly. Maybe different tubing but for a factory option they are FAR from worthless.

Do you have a Trailhunter? Frame mounted.

 

I like the trailhunter's for the interior colors and design. The suspension isn't all that spectacular imo. The snorkel sounds neat, but looks dumb.

edit: The TRD OR premium still has all the good bits including ventilated seats.
