That's my recollection, yes. Both go to a psuedo open-loop. I believe timing can still be pulled if ping is detected

And yet it feels like a power gain? I suppose that's indicative of silent ping and reducing timing (RPM climbing and ECU transitions into open loop) makes more power- but its just not making sense to me still.

It also has a large tendency to downshift and unlock the TC, so that probably makes up a lot of it. Try linearly and slowly increasing the throttle up to WOT until you're at a speed where it doesn't downshift once you get to WOT and see if that power surge goes away. Turning O/D off and doing this in 3rd is probably best

Crap kinda hosed here. Just did a smog check and the guy says i didn't pass because the carb eo number is for 1995 to 2000 year Tacomas and printed out the carb d-425-4 section 27156 letter saying as much.

Is there any updated doc or maybe something from Magnuson that addresses this should be applicable all the way up to the 04?

Found this post In sitting here now while dude looks up D-425-15 and D-186-22 (HKS DLi that was never an issue at other places) to see if i get a pass.

I mean kudos dude is diligent but its pretty obvious this is a TRD factory part.

    Edit, nope, still failed me.

The Magnuson CARB EO is D-488-57 not D-425-4.

D-425-4 pertain to TRD, not the Magnuson.

D-425-4, which is for a 1995-2000 TRD SC:
    https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/aftermarket/devices/eo/d-425-4.pdf

D-425-15, is the updated TRD SC for 1995-2004:

My blower has TRD in the cast so i need to get the TRD applicable sticker in your second post as this smog guy has the tism.

Like im not even mad, dude is doing his job at 100%. Technically I've been riding dirty all this time.

I am peeved that when providing that additional EO number he said it doesn't state it supercedes the prior one and for suggesting i go to the BAR like thats some Sunday stroll.

At a dealership now trying to get the new sticker and will also print out the d-425-15 as well and cross my fingers.

You won’t be able to obtain the sticker from Toyota as the part number is obsolete. eBay or other site like Etsy will be your best bet but you don’t need the sticker, a printout from CARB with the appropriate EO # is efficient.

I would visit another smog place.

Man, I need a CA BAR to get me that in writing. With the D-425-15 letter not matching the D-425-4 sticker he is wanting to see the -15 letter specifying that it supersedes the -4 letter/sticker. At this point I'm thinking of just going to any other place as no other place for the 20+ years this truck has been getting smogged with this blower has ever had an issue.

Edit: "Part number" for the carb EO sticker that applies to all year model 3.4s among other kits as well: the MDC number (Materials Distribution Center) is 00602-89020

    Per this thread:

That’s a wack tech IMO. I wouldn’t give him any more business. Obviously, there’s 2 EO#, one specifying 95-00 and 95-04. -4 would not attain to you as your truck is 01+. Common sense is, when -4 was approved by CARB, 01+ Tacoma wasn’t in production, hence the updated -15 to include 01-04. Is it really that hard to say -15 is meant for the 01-04 Tacoma? I guess not.

And thus for 20 years this truck had no issue. This place has a lawyer + boy scout as a tech. BUT, now that I know the proper sticker, I'm going to get it cause in CA that dude won't be unique, so fine by me to be 'on notice' and get this handled.

Imagine getting stopped at one of those mobile BAR check points and getting hemmed up over a sticker.

Since I had to pay for the first test and the second one is free within 30 days I'm going to give this a go (remove the HKS DLI, touch up some hoses and wires, get the new sticker on and have carb doc in-hand).

Oh, so the HKS DLI, the carb eo for that (D-186-22) shows it was only tested on two cars- I would have assumed that meant/HKS's intent was it was legal on all wasted spark setups it can install on but that tech would only pass those two different cars (to the year model, not gen). Makes me wonder, is he right and HKS and CA derped? Or does this dude need some remedial training? How would a vender be able to make a product meant for hundreds of platforms applicable without testing on every single one? This one actually really has my interest because a buddy of mine got pulled over with a full 1jz-gte swap, standalone etc and was sent to the BAR not over any of that (clean install, cop couldn't tell all that stuff wasn't OEM), but because of the one thing in his engine bay that is shiny but actually has a carb sticker (he didn't have it installed on the hood), the gold shiny DLI...

FYI, the mobile roadside smog is voluntary and not mandatory/mandate by the state. You can opt out and refuse without consequence. Don’t let the CHP scare you to participate. I refused once, I drove away no issue. Folks I know had done the same and refuse to participate and was waved through.

    Roadside Inspection Program
The Roadside Inspection Program conducts voluntary emissions surveys on California roadways. The data collected helps improve the Smog Check Program and clean air efforts. Consumer participation in the roadside survey is voluntary.

95% of CA drivers are uneducated about the program. They seemed to think you have to participate because a CHP officer is standing there. CHP is only there for traffic control and provides security “lol” to the BAR technicians. I refused numerous times because I live in the ghetto neighborhood where these so-called “inspection” is conducted. BAR call it random, I call it targeting. I tell them to find something better to do than waste my time.

yea, one of my buddy is a local police officer and he went through the inspection not knowing. When he told me about it, I laugh and showed him the link. He was pissed because he was there for 20 minutes while the tech snoop around. He thought it was mandatory.

So my local stealership is saying that part (the sticker) is no longer made and they can't find one anywhere. I'm hitting up an eBay vender right now that makes replacement stickers for various TRD intake kits- hopefully they are game to add this D-425-15 one to their lineup.

There’s a company that makes them a few years ago for like $15 ship. They might not be in business now but at least you can reference my picture to the eBay seller, lol
