I’m considering a used 2018 O/R that has a Leer cap, cap and cab roof racks and a roof top tent over the cap.
I know this is a fairly common setup on Tacomas so I’m curious if you have a similar set up and does it give you issues or concerns when it comes to payload.
I know it’s highly dependent on the individual and how much stuff and people you’re packing into the truck. But just curious to hear general thoughts.

Most of those trucks will have airbags or an overload spring keep the rear end from bouncing off the bump stops :notsure:

I can't imagine that setup not having some sort of ass end supplement.

You’d be amazed at how many Tacomas are over payload, people either aren’t aware or don’t care.

Sure, there are supporting mods to shore up weak areas but none of that changes the fact that they’re over payload.

I’m not necessarily saying it’s right or wrong but if it’s something of concern for you, I just wanted to point that out.

Setup like that will also really benefit from leaf spring Hammer Hangers and E rated tires

I'm going to be bumping that gross number, loaded up, without skid plates. That's the only reason I'd choose a different truck.
I'm planning on keeping my build.

Your really going to have to clarify with approx weights as tents vary greatly and how people pack is vastly different. If this is a short or long box comes into play aswell. What is your present set up aswell any lift currently installed?

General rule of thumb stock leaves are flimsy as hell and you should plan on bumping up your leaf pack to compensate.

the 2017 offroad we had only had a 900 pound payload capacity. with a cap, tent, you a passenger and what you pack you will easily be over payload.

will it hurt the truck? who knows. long term maybe. get in an accident and they find out you are overloaded and it could mean propblems for you too.

that still doesn't increase payload capacity.

I put my truck on a cat scale a couple months ago and I was at my 945 lb payload with aluminum skids/sliders, two dudes, our camping supplies, and our camera gear.

Those numbers don't mean anything. Every truck is different depending on the options put on that individual truck at the factory. There is a sticker placed on the driver's door jamb with the info for that individual truck. There will be a statement that reads something like (The weight of all passengers and cargo should not exceed XXXX pounds). The exact number is different for every truck but most 4x4 DC's will be 900-1100 lbs. A 2wd will have a little more payload as will the Access cab because the trucks are lighter.

If you've modified the truck then your payload is less than on the sticker. It's a good idea to actually weigh the truck and subtract that from GVWR to determine your true payload. Remember, you have to also account for the weight of passengers and if you tow tongue weight. A 5000 lb trailer will put 650 lbs on your suspension.

Modifying the suspension to make the truck sit level while overloaded doesn't fix anything, it only hides the problem. GVWR also takes into account steering and braking. If your bed is overloaded that takes weight off the front axle. The axle that does about 80% of your braking and 100% of your steering. If those front wheels aren't firmly planted on the pavement braking and steering are compromised.

i think what many do not understand is that your cell phone, wallet, winter jacket compared to just a tee shirt....etc...etc all contribute to the actual payload you are carrying. seems many think its just what you stick in the bed.

    truth....

No but it sure helps the way the truck will handle the weight. Once a driver weight is added easily 70% of these trucks are over gvm these days. It's so easy to blow by the payload rating. Assuming 3-400 in 2 passengers plus cap and rack is 250+ before you have anything else added to the bed or account for any additional mods.

I would disagree with you saying making the truck sit level loaded doesnt change anything. I ran ome 111's and just as you noted when loaded for a trip and towing that steering became very light and floaty at times it was easy to feel when the weight shifted. Move forward a year now running dobinsons 112 in the rear and just adding a bit more rear bias rake aided in overall handling but was substantially notable once towing fully loaded. When I would load the ome's sagged and the front end would lift substantially easily now fully loaded it comes up a bit but nearly never sits level.

I couldn't imagine towing empty with a stock leaf pack.

Dobinsons 112's easily 500lbs added static plus the tongue weight.
And short of suffering on major head winds version 2.0 drives substantially better

At the end of the day, I use my truck for what I need to use my truck for. I don't run it over to some truck scale just to make sure I did not exceed some total weight spec number. Now I don't do anything stupid like trying to move a Stonehenge rock with it, but I really don't sweat normal everyday use that may or may not exceed some number stamped inside the fucking door.

    This and that
That’s why you need the winch, front bumper, and 2 agm batteries. :D Gotta match the rear.
