IMG_0448.jpg IMG_0447.jpg So I bought this new create motor to changeout my blown motor on my 2012 Tacoma the only thing I see that is different is the exhaust port on the new motor doesn’t have that extra hole above the exhaust port will it still work or do I need a different head to make it work

12-15 engines are different than 05-11 engines, they have the ports for the Secondary Air Injection System (SAIS).

You either need the right engine/heads or you will have to do the @hewitt-tech SAIS bypass kit and block off the SAIS port in the manifolds.

What is the downside of deleting this secondary air injection system. I will probably do the by pass cause it will be the easiest way to go but just for more knowledge about what it really does thank you for the reply cause I really don’t want to buy heads and deal with all the timing that’s why I got a long block for. But may be that’s why was so cheap the engine was cause I bet they had this problem so they could recoup some of there money back from me sly guy that guy was

So how many variants are there 2 or 3 and from what year to what year? Is only the exhaust port that has changed or multiple things changed?

Some people still get an occasional CEL for the SAIS even with the kit but other than that there shouldn't be any negative effects, the system is only used on a cold start to pump air into the cats and help them heat up faster.

To my knowledge for the Tacoma 1GR-FE just 2, 05-11 and 12-15. Only difference is the ports in the heads and obviously the manifolds have the ports to match.
The 4Runner 1GR-FE a 3rd variant, the 03-~05 had a different tone wheel on the cams and different cam sensors and will not run in a Tacoma without swapping both.

Op, I'm curious as to where you found a new crate engine?

Some guy had in his shop when I seen how nice and clean it looked I could of only dreamed of engines looking that shiny and new but I never take out my engine yet to see the difference in the exhaust ports so I guess I have to buy this bypass kit in the install instructions it seems easy enough to do

Is it a rebuilt engine or new from Toyota?

I haven’t seen a long block in either form in years.

The exhaust manifold studs on the 'new' head don't have the same e-torx ends on the studs as the orginal head or the new studs that Toyota sells. Not sure if that means Toyota didn't install the studs or not. I just replaced my manifold studs this weekend and noticed the difference.

It's rebuilt, you can tell by the pitting on the exhaust ports. A new head would have a machined finish.

Toyota doesn't sell longblocks for any of their engines as far as I'm aware.
