I've had mine for a few months now. We've taken it up to the national forests here in VA twice. Its so badass, compared with ground camping. The mattress is very comfortable. We have a Rumpl puffy blanket and have been cozy on colder nights. I have a buddy heater I can reach down and turn on when it dips below 40 degrees. With it on its like having heated floors! (We leave one of the squares out because my wife is only 5') I got a bedrug so our teenager sleeps diagonal downs stairs no problem. The tent breaths great, we leave the corner flaps open all night, really no condensation, and that's with no headliner as they've been backed up. FYSA we did lose 1 mpg highway since putting it on and the rear leafs did sag, so I put on OMU springs. As I write this out headliner is on its way, which should help with insulation. Overall very very happy.

 

Is this foam backed carpet?

 

It’s whatever headliner material GFC makes it with. It’s a thicker carpet material, it may have a thin foam liner on the inside. But it’s more or less carpet on both sides held up with Velcro supplied by GFC in the kit.

So at first look, I'm thinking that they may not be compatible with one another...that said, I'll fire over a DM and see if we can do a little collaborative testing to see.

Just visited their shop in Manhattan. Nice looking campers. They told me for garage clearance it would be 29” above the rails (3rd gen). That puts it right about 81” on my truck. The garage is measured at 83”.

Do those numbers sound accurate? That’s a lot tighter than I was hoping. Wondering if it’ll actually fit.

 

Was finally able to do a quick getaway and found that accessing the tent through the bed was a bit cumbersome, especially with the Decked. Will def be using the ladder the next time I get out when with my partner and her dog. Also realized I needed a pull strap

 

Been looking at these and competitors for a while and the utility of the passthrough always seemed questionable. Has me looking at a topper and a tent, so I can at least remove the tent when not using. (I hoist my existing soft shell RTT to the garage ceiling when not in use). Do people not bring gear in their bed when camping? Gearless camping is a thing? How many use the passthrough vs. ladder?

 

I'm on 33s and about 2.5 inch lift I'm not clearing a 7fr garage door

 

The passthrough is nice for standing up and changing. The GFC also looks a lot sleeker imo and is lower profile than a topper paired with a RTT. It would definitely be easier for me to get into the tent without the Decked but I like how organized and accessible my gear is so it’s staying. I played with the idea of getting rid of the Decked and building a half drawer system out of 8020 but the minor inconvenience doesn’t justify the effort and money to do so.

Also, the larger gear is generally unpacked and taken out once camp is set up, leaving a somewhat empty bed with ample room

 

Do y’all have any tips or tricks on how to close the top easier?
Just had a hell of a time yesterday with the canvas sticking out here or there preventing me from closing it

 

Ordered this so I wouldn’t need to pull down on the fabric when closing. I stash it inside the tent when closed and put it on before fully opening. Also makes it easier to tuck in the fabric in, to me at least.

I don't use a ladder. I had a RTT on a shell and wouldn't go back if I had a choice. The truck drives better on and off road with a GFC than it did with a shell and RTT and I can fit it into my garage while the truck with a RTT was about 3" taller than my garage opening.

My bed layout allows me to step into the bed then use my fridge to climb into the GFC. Gear gets stacked on the storage bench I built at the front of the bed. I pull a trailer when the family is going out together so kitchen stuff and bedding for the adults doesn't take up space in the back of the truck. If it's just me I can pack for a week or more and be fine.



On multi-week trips with the family there is no getting around having to move things out of the bed for easier access but if you pack with a plan it only takes a minute to do that.

 

That would definitely help for pulling it down, my issue is more so getting the tent fabric on the sides to not be sticking out a little bit so I can’t close it… especially behind the awning where I can’t see well

Might just get a long broom stick or a pool cue haha

 

the pass through has a lot of utility for getting my dog up and down from there, I don’t use it too often otherwise though. Typically use the ladder.

 

Saw someone over on the GFC forum with a GFC tent with GFC topper that actually seemed sleeker since the tent was lower (had to ditch the sharkfin). On a taco the GFC tent width is the same as the topper top width. But yeah, my soft shell RTT (or some other oddball) on a GFC topper is the opposite of sleek.

 

The transformafloor is one of the best parts of a gfc being able to stand up in the camper to change or just take shelter if weather sucks is a great benefit.

 

Leave the doors unzipped about 1/4 of the way. then when you get it pretty much down. "Karate chop" the sides into the tent. That gets 90% of it,, the close it down but dont latch then lift up kinda quick to about 1/4-/3 open and it creates a suction to pull the tent in.
